Truth be told, "modern skins" made their debut in Winamp 3, and were simply carried over to Winamp 5. So it's really "pre-Winamp 3 days".

You are correct, but winamp 3 was just god-awful. They got rid of the jump-key!!! What a stupid idea!? Good thing they saw the light and brought that one back.

My comment about "as old as 2-bit graphics" refer to the fact I would've had to drag'n drop music files onto the player instead of having a library feature.

Anyway, here's what Winamp5 looks like with the iTunes4Winamp skin installed.

My HD is limited to 4 GB. It's a bit small for the OS, applications and data. I'll need to squeeze all files quite a bit. Music encoded in AAC 64kbps would mean I could squeeze my entire CD library into about 4GB. And if I do pick'n choose tracks, I should be able to reduce that to under 1GB.

Also, I'm using 64kbps AAC because it doesn't use much more CPU compared to 64kbps MP3, and 64kbps AAC is 44KHz while 64kbps MP3 is only 22KHz.

I can already hear a few out there "eww, AAC 64kbps". Well, I guess this time I can be somehow glad I don't have excellent hearing. And just for fun, compare 64kbps MP3 to 64kbps AAC, you'll know why I choose AAC ;-)

Edit: Cool, I even found a plug-in that can display a JPEG file located in the album folder...

Believe me or not, I'm using Win98SE that has only 4.0 MB space on the prime hard disk and 4.1 MB on the secondary (sorry, I might not know the proper words but you get the point? Anyway, I have even less disk space than Yvan256).

I used only WinAmp until two weeks ago, I think. That was when I got frustrated with one song in mpc format that couldn't be played on my mp3 player. So I went to the Internet and searched for a freeware converter. What I found and downloaded after taking a look at the features was not only a converter but also a player, MediaMonkey.

MediaMonkey supports every file format I know and some that I have never heard of, it's compatible to iPod and many other portable audio devices (I don't think it is with mine but I don't even know what kind of mp3 player I have, at least not iPod :D), has the music library feature etc.

The not-so-good things about the player is that it tends to have problems sometimes ('The canvas does not allow drawing' or 'MediaMonkey can not create a DC to [artist - title]' or something like that, I have no idea what those are about but I don't think it's too often at all and the problem might be only on my cpu, I'm not sure. Anyway, that's only up to 1 time a day as far as I know and I don't have to restart my cpu, either) and, of course, with so many features, it requires a bit more ram than for example Wa.
Oh, and if I want to edit tags, I must do it in MediaMonkey and not WinAmp. Don't ask me why. :)

I still like Winamp 2 and I use it, too, when I'm doing something else that requires a lot of ram.

I'm not sure if this helped you in any way since you already were satisfied with Wa.

I wouldn't be asking for an iTunes alternative for an old Pentium 166MMX, 64MB, 6GB, Windows 98SE laptop if I could afford an iBook.

So, unless you can find me an iTunes-compatible iBook (G3/400MHz or higher) for 200$CAN, your answer is not that helpful. :)

haha you just missed a G3 iBook 500 mhz go for $131 US :p

Always check ebay.

Well, depends on what you're looking for. Winamp is really terrible compared to iTunes. iTunes allows you to search your library easily, make smart playlists that update themselves, and is not a damn small window that could even fit on a Gameboy Advance display.

And I'm not putting down Winamp because I've never used it. Winamp was my player for about 4-5 years before I ditched it for iTunes.

Winamp might be less CPU, RAM and ressources intensive, but it's closer to using a command-line interface than a full-fledged player when compared to iTunes.

As for skins, blah. They're fun for 5 minutes, then it's just pointless. Unless you can point me to a "skin" that nearly emulates iTunes with the library, genre/artist/album selection and smart playlists.

I just can't believe no open-source team tried to "clone" it so far (exactly for the same reasons you stated, i.e. "bloated" application).
[doublepost=1474493372][/doublepost]Have you tried a free download called MEDIAMONKEY? It lets you sync your ipod or iphone just like itunes can and it uses way less cpu and memory to play music files and playlists and you can manually set it to show the columns like album, song title, album title, song length and album covers views just like in itunes. And just like in itunes it plays your wave, itunes music files, and mp3 files plus a bunch of other formats like flac. I love it. I still use itunes only to rip cd's and download from the itunes store. But I use MEDIAMONKEY to manage my playlists and music files because it can handle a huge amount of playlists and music files with very little memory and cpu power. Once I went MEDIAMONKEY I never went back. Oh you can also rip cd's in mediamonkey and convert between wave and mp3's and MEDIAMONKEY will let you burn your music files to cd. Give it a try. www.mediamonkey.com
