i have several logings to my laptop (mbp), i have managed to get itunes to store music in one place for all logins, so anything ripped etc ends up there (i have no home internet, so drm'd aac files are not an issue - i have none of them.

however each user maintains a copy of the library locally (the data file, not the media files) leading to an issue of keeping them in sync.

q: is there a way to get a single library serve several users? I'm thinking having a single library file, and replacing one or two users files with symbolic links to this one file. thus several users will 'share' a library file (while others could have their own) allowing me to keep these things in sync where i want. can anyone see a problem with this idea? or is there a vastly more simple way of doing this?

simply getting itunes to refresh the library every once in a while to pickup new media files (even if manually triggered) doesn't work since sharing playlists etc won't happen.

ideas?

Have you tried holding down ( I think ) the Apple key when launching iTunes? That allows you to select a library.

Put your library file in the same place your tunes are.
Make an alias to the folder containing the files and put that alias in Music. The same way your iTunes music is stored right now.

That's option (alt).
This would work if all accounts have access to the one accounts music folder.

cheers and good luck
