iTunes "Sound Enhancer"... what does it do exactly?

Does anyone use this? Any reason it is on by default? What does it do exactly.

It applies some processing effects, along the lines of SRS, etc.

I think it helps typical computer speakers sound better, just try it out and use what sounds best to you-
