I keep all my iTunes files on an external hard drive. I noticed recently that while in iTunes, it shows that I have 46GB of music but the iTunes file on my hard drive is 162GB. It doesn't look like any music is duplicated. Is there a common reason for the difference? Is there something I can do to keep music from taking up so much space on my external hard drive?

The 46Gb number only adds up what is shown on the display not what is in the librery. Perhpas you have a subset selected, like for example just the music and no TV shows or maybe some search criteria is in effect.
