The issue with the other Studios not participating with iTunes in the Cloud should be up soon. Until then you will have to sit tight. And like most things with Apple when they release something they make changes down the road when enough customers make requests upon something. Best thing would be to voice your opinion to Apple. Apple does listen.

I set my download preference to 720p because I have an original Apple TV and and Apple TV2 as well as an iPhone 4. But I also have a 27" iMac and will be getting an updated Apple TV(3?) that supports the 1080p as well as the new iPad at some point I suppose. So after I have purchased and downloaded the movie, I switch the preference to 1080p, go to purchases in the store, and download the 1080p version. A bit of a pain and extra space, but I would like the to have the 1080p version and yet be able to play the movie on an Apple TV2 or iPad2 as well. I've even downloaded the 1080p copy of most if not all of the HD movies that I had already bought prior to the addition of 1080p. There are some HD movies that don't have a 1080p yet, so be it.
 
Ok, so I've now figured out what the issue is. On the new iPad, if you download a video from iCloud, and select HD you get it in 1080p if it's available. The issue is, and I guess that this is a bug in the software, if the 1080p file is 870 MB and the 720p file is 700 MB, the iTunes app will tell you that the file you are downloading is 700 MB, which implies that you are downloading the 720p version. Once the file reaches 700 out of 700 MB it will continue downloading until it reaches 870 out of 700 MB.

I had always just looked at the file size when the download began and compared it to the 1080p file size which was larger. I therefore assumed that the file I was downloading was the 720p file. It looks like the iTunes app needs to be updated to list the 1080p file size as its target, but otherwise it's working fine.
 
Out of interest, how large are the 1080p movies from iTunes?

In my experience with compressed BluRay originals, The physical disc, which Apple hates, naturally being THE very best quality a consumer can purchase.

The originals BluRay files are something like 25GB are they not?

As I understand it, to get a compressed copy which is, by normal eye virtually indistinguishable to the original you are looking at around 12GB

To get something that still looks very nice we are looking at around 8GB

So how big are iTunes 1080p files?

So, no-one knows how large a typical 1080p movie is downloaded from iTunes is then?

Does no-one here download these things?
 
Does anyone know why my 2008 aluminum MacBook plays 1080p files (verified by checking file size and info) when it is not supposed to? They also won't sync to my iPad 2, so I'm assuming they're the 1080p files iTunes claims them to be. If I download a movie on my iPad via iCloud, and sync back to my Mac, I get the message that there are purchased items on the iPad not present on the Mac. If I tell it to transfer these items, what is it transferring? a 720p file? I can't find the file anywhere if that's the case. Strnagely, after the sync is finished, it splits the movie and any iTunes extras into two separate icons in my library...
