1) not in the foreseeable future... they have to maintain compatibility with their device lineup.
2) what more do you want over AAC-256, ALAC? ALAC files are much larger for what most would consider a minimal increase in quality.

I've been buying a movie here and there from itunes and I've noticed that the newer SD catalog movies seem to be better quality. I bought the movie of the week "Are We There Yet" and it was in 853x480 and was quite happy with the quality.
