iTunes Store no longer supported in iOS 6?

My girlfriend's iPhone 5 gave an error as soon as she opens the iTunes Store that it is a feature that is no longer supported. It still kind of works, but she cannot search or navigate it at all.

Is this the case for others? It's not like she can do a fresh install without being bumped to iOS 7.

It seems to be working fine on my iPhone 4S, running iOS 6.1.3.

A quick google search gave me this thread on Apple Discussion forums with a similar problem as well as a solution

- open Music app
- in the upper right corner, click "Store"
- iTunes Store app opens and all those fantastic features are back
