I have iTunes 7.05. I've tried to update. It says update found and I say to start it, but then nothing seems to happen. I am considering uninstalling it and reinstalling from scratch. But I don't want to lose my music or ratings. If I uninstall then reload, will my music and ratings still be available?

You will definitely not lose your music by uninstalling iTunes. On Windows computers, iTunes music is stored in the My Music folder, whereas on Macs the files are stored in the user profile Music folder. The play counts, ratings, playlists, etc are a different story; they will probably be lost unless you export the library out as an xml file for backup purposes. It's also a possibility that iTunes (the newer version) will upgrade the library and all your data will still be there. I would recommend trying to export the library from under the File menu. Follow this article if you have XP to uninstall iTunes fully: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925. Otherwise you'll go to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 for Vista. Mac OS X uninstalls are the simplest, documented in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224.

Resolved - Reinstalled successfully.

Thanks, JediMeister. I followed the instructions you pointed me to for XP and it worked without a hitch. I exported my library first but didn't need to use it - my ratings and playlists were all there with the reinstall.

:)
