iTunes update

At the moment the only apple products I have are a iPod and iPad. Both are on iso6 which I have no immediate plans of updating to iso 7. My question is about the latest iTunes update and is it comparable with the ISP 6 software and will it continue to be so in the foreseeable future my fear is that if I updated the iTunes without updating the players I'll be stuck out in the cold.😕
