itunes won't load MP4s

I have some MP4's (h.264, AAC) that i converted off MKVs. however, i drag them into itunes and nothing happens; it won't load them into the library. they play fine; i managed to get one of the batch into itunes and on my ipad, but the rest won't work.

any help? i've tried re-encoding. there are no errors on the files.

Check in itunes preferences that it copies files to the library when opened.

i don't want them copying files to library, i want it to just read off the source folder

it does it fine for mp3s
