I don't want a situation where I have to do a fresh install of MacOS and I lose all my archived email because it is only stored locally.

No, why would it? They're safe in Fastmail so you won't lose anything.

1. Fastmail costs money
2. Fastmail has been the subject of DDOS attacks in the last two months
3. For anyone not snarky and wanting to move email from Fastmail (or just about any mail platform to Apple... load the "from" account (in this case, Fastmail) into Mail. Use IMAP. Drag files from Fastmail to a new folder in Mail. It will transfer your emails from Fastmal to Mail and then upload them to iCloud automatically.

So? They provide excellent service for the money you give them.

Any provider can be DDoS'ed. What, you think people don't attack Apple?

Will it? I can't see that happening.

3) It will, as long as the mailbox you are dragging them into is connected to an iCloud mail account. if it's only a local mailbox, the email will only be locally stored.

I still use Fastmail - it is great. But like you, I've had many days where I just sit there waiting to connect because they're being constantly DOSed and this has been going on for some time, not just an isolated event.

So I bought a domain and set it up with Apple's Mail and that has been working really well for me.

Like others said here, I have Fastmail set up with Apple Mail but the only way this gets into your iCloud storage is to drag/drop the emails to an iCloud folder - which I do manually now and then because I've moved most of my mail to my custom email domain (been working REALLY well with Apple mail).

Did your purchase your domain through Apple (Cloudflair)? Or from Fastmail? I have read that some people are having problems setting up a custom domain to work with Apple Mail iCloud+. I currently have a domain purchased from Namecheap which I am using with Proton but am contemplating using Apple Mail instead. Your views would be appreciated.

I’ve been using Fastmail for a few months have been very happy with it. I haven’t had any issues connecting to it.

Yeah the dos attacks ended awhile ago. They were severe for about 4 months. But it’s been good this year.
Ok good. I’ve been very impressed with them so far. I don’t mind me/iCloud email, but I don’t want to have all my eggs in one basket. I use a separate password manager and now a separate email. If something happens to my Apple ID, at least I can access my passwords and email.

I registered my domain(s) through Hover and pointed them towards Fastmail. I can't imagine trusting my email to a services offering from Apple... is there something about Proton you don't like?

Godaddy for my domains. Worked pretty good for me. Apple mails spam filtering isn’t amazing. Only negative I have. I use it to have one less bill to pay. I’m subscriptioned out.

No, Proton is good. Just like to know what else is out there.

I'm the same way. With inflation raising prices and my income staying the same, I went through all of my bills and started slashing subscriptions , unnecessary insurance coverage, phone plans, etc. I estimate that I reduced expenses expenses by around $400 usd/month that way.

That should at least cover the inflated cost of gas, lol.

Fastmail worked pretty good for me. I liked their advanced email rules and per-folder archive settings. I really really miss that last one.

My only gripes with Fastmail were the pricing and syncing with Apple apps - contacts, calendar. I almost missed a few appointments because I added an appointment to Fastmail calendar, and it didn't sync to my phone, so I didn't get an alert or even see it on my calendar app.

Like you, I changed a lot also. I changed cell phone carriers (saved about $60 a month on that alone) and started to shop differently now too.

With all these companies going subscription, they better be worth it if they want my business. I dropped Disney+ because I felt it wasn’t worth it anymore.

Fastmail, I’ll keep. I’m paid up for the next 3 years so I hope things are better by then.
