    When I go to the HOSTS file via Finder 'Go to folder' /private/etc/hosts
    I see lots of HOSTS files. Why is this and which one is the one the system uses .. ?
    If I open the Terminal and type :
    sudo nano /private/ets/hosts
    I assume than the 'working' hosts file is shown.. This hosts file seem empty.
    What to do?

    (strangly enough the Terminal starts with saying 'You have new mail.' ..)

    Help and insight really appreciated

    Peace and Happiness,
    Petra

    there should only be one "hosts" file in /etc/
    on my system I also see a "hosts.equiv" file but I don't know what it does.

    EDIT:
    also, wrong subforum. this is more of an OS X question than a Mac Pro question...

    I'd delete them altogether except for the "hosts.equiv". then create a fresh "hosts" containing the following entries:

    ##
    # Host Database
    #
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    ##
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
