I've gotten myself i n a hell of a mess

Guys

Again, thanks to all of you. I would never have gotten responses like this on an MS forum.

The good news is, things are back to normal. I took the Mac into an Apple store (God, are those people busy) and the tech got everything straightened out in about 20 mins. He wasn't sure what I had done but he knew how to fix it. he found a couple of the applications in the trash and the rest in an applications folder in the innards that I had not been able to locate. The bad news is i lost most of my third party software but that's easily replaceable. The best news is it was free. The tech said as long as he could fix it while I was sitting at the bench there was no charge.

He didn't seem to think I could have done it by tinkering with the icons but I've learned my lesson: leave the icons to hell alone.

I'm so accustomed to having to make adjustments on the PC I figured I could do the same on the Mac. I know better now, but I had to stick my tongue to the flagpole when it was minus 10.

I hope I won't have to scream again anytime soon.

Glad you got it all sorted out. Don't let it stop you from tinkering BUT make sure you know what you're doing first.

We'd love a pic of your tongue on the flagpole. :D

Hopefully the tech showed you how to put apps on the dock while he was at it.

Yeah, I felt like a fifth grader. L ne day I'll get this all down and say goodbye to Bill Gates.

What a glorious day that is :D

This was quite an interesting "drama" to read.

Was the OP gonna fix the problem, will he now have icon-phobia for life, will he revert back to the darkside aka MS, or will the guru's of MR be able to walk him through it... LOL

Nonetheless, glad you got it all squared away!!

As a result of my MS background I'm a little uncomfortable with icons, probably more so now. But that doesn't slow me down. When I got the iMac I intended to use it almost exclusively for pix editing; now it may become my main machine.

As for the MR gurus: Irreplaceable.

But that doesn't slow me down.

That's the spirit ! ;)

Fwiw, the icons on my computers are 95% custom, I hate the generic ones, never had a single issue.

I use LiteIcon for system wide changes, manual replacement for drives and some apps .

Just be careful once you start digging into your main folder, don't move or replace things unless you know what you are doing.

When in doubt, work with aliases.

Thanks for the tip on LiteIcon. It's now on my list of things to investigate.
