I'm not sure I understand your thinking. Why did you buy it when you knew about this problem beforehand? Maybe she spilled some liquid and it fried something inside. It's a computer. It can be damaged. Would you also buy a Mercedes with a leaky engine, because it was a good price?

Other people have given you some pointers and ideas. You can act and do something about it. Or you can keep blaming someone else for your own mistake of buying a device you knew wasn't functioning right.

I mean I blame Apple for a lot of things. But this is not one of them.
I didn't know it wasn't functioning beforehand, you've misunderstood something somewhere.

lol quick turn of events, should of bought a M3 14” MacBook Pro Instead of used, you payed overs anyway.
Are you out of your mind? Apple products aren't worth that much money. The only reason the prices are as high as they are is because idiots are willing to pay.

To be honest I think you’re just upset because you bought a damaged computer that is otherwise considered extremely reliable.

As for the value, I challenge you to find a better alternative for the money. The MacBook Air has 77% more pixels than the $600 dell XPS. The Asus Zenbook is decently competitive but starts $400 higher than the Air. And of course, neither of these computers will run as cool as the air or last as long on battery.

Your initial post was with excitement to be apart of the club. If this was my first Mac, I’d be a little upset too. I think it’s messed up your roommate willingly sold a computer they had issues with, unless they disclosed that to you and you shrugged it off.

I think you're absolutely right, I was upset that I brought a product that for years I had heard so much praise over. I hope the forums can forgive my rants.

I'm not sure my roommate knew there was a freezing issue. I've seen her use an iPhone and an iPad, never a laptop, and she said she didn't use the MBA much so she likely didn't encounter the freezes very often. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. I did look the machine over, prior to a purchase agreement, and it looked like she just pulled it out of the box. Any dents, scuffs or scratches would have alerted me to possible mishandling/damage.

Value is in the eyes of the beholder. I don't really care what a piece of tech looks like so long as it functions properly, so I don't care about the number of pixels so long as the screen is readable. The dell XPS is a fine machine once you install Linux or BSD.

I will say that the battery life on the M1 MBA is amazing, I've only added one charge cycle since taking possession of it two days ago and I've been doing a lot of work to get it up and running.

Yeah, all very valid. I’m sorry for the pains you’re having. It wouldn’t be detectable with a visual inspection, but as someone else said, it could be liquid damage. I’m honestly surprised if it wasn’t because these machines are genuinely so reliable (not to pretend there aren’t issues, but they seem very seldom).

Your view on value is fair. I do a lot of photo and video editing and used to do luxury real estate, so a nice looking screen is something I value. Even if I didn’t, I like a nice quality screen for general web browsing too. And I do believe the trackpad is irrefutably the best in the market. There’s also value in a non disruptive OS like macOS. Windows is always trying to force something on me.

I used to build computers from parts, so I know how careful one should be when working with internal components. If I took the back cover of this MBA off, would I be able to detect liquid damage by looking for moisture indicators that have turned pink? Are Apple laptops equipped with these indicators?

Oh, I totally agree, if you're doing photo and video editing then you will need a good quality screen. I will admit that this trackpad feels better than any laptop I've ever used. And the screen on this MBA is so clear, I can't even see the individual pixels. Perhaps my perspective on aesthetic value could benefit from improvement.. could be that I'm still stuck in the 1990's.

To be honest I wouldn’t be able to tell you. I haven’t bought a new Mac since 2012. However, I buy all my used laptops through r/Appleswap or eBay. Paying with PayPal essentially gives me a 30-day trial if the computer doesn’t work. If the description doesn’t say anything like “works as intended,” I message the seller to make sure they stipulate it. That way, if it doesn’t, I have a case with PayPal to get my money back. It’s never even gone that far for me.

It can be hard to except new luxuries and technologies. I certainly can’t embrace the new technology in cars. I think the amount of technology we demand in them is a mistake. However, things like a nice display and a nice trackpad - you can do the things you have to do with “any tool,” but it’s okay to enjoy yourself while you do those tasks. A nice display that’s as sharp as paper, bright, vivid and a trackpad is just a pleasure to use are luxuries that are okay for you to have. Yes, a 1280x800 allows you to work, but a Retina display makes it nice to enjoy. Yes, a windows trackpad that understands your keyboard gestures 80% of the time is manageable, but the Apple one works 100% of the time and is “nicer.”

Enjoy some luxuries in life man, I get it. I used to be the same. Don’t have much advice for your current situation, especially if Apple won’t help you, but I wouldn’t disown the Mac over it

Wow this started off so positive, shame it turned out not to be a good user experience.

I got my M1 MBA last week and I am thoroughly loving it, it has for the most part been very fast, smooth and responsive.

One app that has been giving me uphill is Google Chrome, it seems to cause havoc but once I turned off hardware acceleration it stopped, does not really matter too much though as. I use Safari as my main brown on my iPhone and iPad Pro anyway, so will stick to the same on my MBA.

This is my first Apple laptop. Imagine being in the middle of designing an image (computer graphics) or a video presentation (video editing) that you've spent hours on and the laptop randomly freezes causing you to press the power button until a reboot is forced. Does that mean hours of work down the drain? I will start using Command-S just in case.

Google Chrome's hardware acceleration can cause problems in some Linux distros too.

Do you want to hear something funny? Do you remember when I told you I connected a Bluetooth mouse (generic Best Buy brand mouse)? The computer hasn't frozen since then. It went from freezing two or three times a day to no freezing at all after I connected the Bluetooth mouse. Maybe an I/O controller problem?

Well, the MBA froze up a few times last night. I think my last post here jinxed it, lol. It was going so well for a while and then the freezes started again. I talked to the person I purchased the laptop from and she agreed to give me a full refund. The machine even froze up in the recovery screen, while I was reinstalling macOS - this tells me that this is a hardware problem and nothing I do is going to fix it.

I think I’m going to save my money and purchase a new MacBook directly from Apple.

That was nice of your Roomate. Sorry for the issues. You could also check out the Apple refurb store. I also notice this forum highlights that’s the M1 MacBook Air can go on sale for as little as $750.

Buying on swappa or eBay will also get you purchase protection through PayPal. Essentially a 30-day guarantee that it is working

Since Apple is still selling the M1 MacBook Air I’m assuming that the freezing issue on my M1 MacBook Air is not that widespread. Thank you for the ideas, 30 days should be plenty of time to notice any issues. I do like Apple’s refurb store, I’ve purchased some items from there before and they are essentially brand new.

I'm revisiting this thread to update some information. Yesterday I noticed that Apple had released some updates, including one for macOS. So I updated the MacBook Air M1 to macOS Sonoma 14.5 to see if the freezing issue was still there. After updating, it took two updates to bring the machine up to the current version, it seems the freezing issue has been resolved. I'm guessing the freezing issue was in the restore image, which would explain the issue still being present even after a full restore. Sonoma 14.5 seems to have fixed the problem.
