iWork - Word opening files question

Ok so they say that word can open the new Pages files but thats not the case for me. Word just says cannot open file. This is becase pages is a .pages format. I even tried changing the file extension to .doc but stillw ould not do it. This is Microsoft Office 2004 btw. Help?

Word for Windows or Mac cannot open pages documents. Pages can however open and export Word files.

To open a file created in Pages in Word you must first export the Pages file to Word format. File > Export.

You heard wrong. Pages can open Word format. Word can't open Pages format.

One thing about Pages that bugs me is that if you work on a word document it converts it to Pages format. I think if a file is .doc, pages should automatically save it as a .doc.
