Not that anyone knows the answer to this, but perhaps how it has been handled in the past can answer how it will be handled in the future. If I purchase iWork apps from the Mac App Store now, will the new version that comes out (whenever that may be) be a free update? I am assuming it will be a completely new version (ie. iWork 12 vs iWork 09), rather than a delta update. Any thoughts?

It will not be free.

Apple only provides free upgrades when that announce the new version and typically when they provide the date to which it will be available.

Apple has been mum on any possible upgrade/new version of iwork, for some time.

Am I right in thinking there is no precedence yet? No paid apple software in the mac app store has yet received a paid update, right? I don't mind paying for a new iWork if it has compelling new features, but I guess there are lots of people out there wondering if their potentially brand new iWork 09 is soon to be due a paid upgrade.

I bought Numbers because I really needed it, but I am hesitant to buy the rest of the suite because I will be royally ticked if I do that and then 10 days later they announce a new version.

If you need it, buy it. We've all been expecting updates to the iWork apps "any day now" for two years!

Ehh, you don't know that for a fact. It is a valid assumption and surely Apple is considering it but there still exists the possibility that the next version may just be a free upgrade for existing users.
After all, all apps on the MAS have one version which is constantly updated. I am yet to see an app that has multiple versions on the App Store.
