Why? Financially, perhaps, but i'm sure he has enough money for a few lifetimes. He wants his content to be accessible to as many people as possible, not just those with an apple TV. Thats a good thing.

Sorry, it is about money as much as it is about anything else. If he is able to produce successful projects with others, he has a chance to make much more, but the risk is his.

I think I'd done the same. It's a shame though because I'm sure he had been a great match with apple.

I'm a fan of Apple and would normally root for them to get the pieces they need to produce something great but I get why JJ Abrams said no and I'm kind of happy he did. I want to see him making movies unrestricted by what Apple wants him to produce and I for sure want his films to get theatrical releases. As of now, it doesn't look like Apple's movies will be played in theatres, outside of the film festivals where Apple acquired them.

500 Million wasted, since either way his work would have been available to the entirety of China and India (1,8 Billion viewers) if you know what I mean

(no matter how strong's yer copyright in the west, over there it's copied for free)

It was smart, he knows Apple TV plus is limited to iOS users only
He made the right choice, but ATV+ is not limited to iOS (and tvOS and iPadOS and macOS) only... Apple TV+ is available on a select few new TVs and will probably be added to many more in the future if the trend continues. Limited audience now but the potential to grow is there.

It's a shame Apple doesn't think different enough to go beyond family friendly in their own productions, but that's their call. I still find it ironic they want to be family friendly but continue to sell a lot of content that isn't family friendly...

AppleTV+ is offering nothing I am interested in, as long as I can continue to use VLC on my Apple tech then the native TV+ app will just be used to buy occasional movies from the store and ignore Apple content.

As far as Abrams, the less I say the better.

I think this was a poor move by Abrams.
It what way was it bad beside not getting Apple's $$$?

Once someone like Abrams reaches a certain amount of success, $$$ is less of an incentive for them.

If anything, Abrams rejecting Apple's offer doesn't look good for Apple.

He is over-rated. And I wish they would get a different picture rather than keep using that scary Aniston shot.

I think it’s a poor move by Apple. By continuing to be greedy and relentlessly pushing for exclusivity, Apple missed out. A little bit of something is much better than a whole lot of nothing.

agree all they needed to do was contract JJ for 5-10 shows and call it a day

Incorrect. Per CNET:

“Apple TV Plus will presumably be available on some competitor's devices. Apple's TV app is available on smart TVs from Samsung, and it's supposed to become available this year on Roku, Amazon's Fire TV devices and smart TVs from Sony, LG and Vizio. Subscribers will also be able to watch Apple TV Plus on the web at tv.apple.com.”

$500 million up front is a crazy amount of money just for exclusivity rights. I'm guessing that not taking this deal means earning more money in the long run?
In my opinion, these people are so rich money is of little interest anymore but care deeply about their fame so much more. How may celebrities have we heard of that have homes on every continent, yet when they fall out of favor with the general public, they are DESTROYED?. JMHO

How is that putting work above money? He’s putting differently structure money ahead of apple’s money.
He had the opportunity to earn half a billion dollars with Apple but turned it down to pursue other ventures. It would have been far easier to take the money but he chose not to.

Good move. Bad Robot should have the freedom to produce bad content for a variety of platforms.
Abrams is still under the delusion that he has talent. Time should absolve him of that notion in 5 or 10 years.

Apple demanded to film new shows with that new triple lens ugliness

They probably demanded he produce good shows and he realized he can't live up to Apple's expectations.

Because I think he's overrated and this was an opportunity to not only make money, but get his content to over a billion devices with screens.

If he think he can do his own thing better, that's fine...but I think we'll look back on this as a mistake. I think Apple TV+ will be a force in 5 years.

As an example, the Force Awakens was disappointing, at least from a storyline perspective and sad for the fans. He had everything and fumbled it by rehashing a story already told. I hope he redeems himself in Episode 9. I am rooting for him.
