Upgrade to iOS 4.0 with Pwnage Tool 4.0, unlock with ultrasn0w 0.93.
There is no reason to keep his phone at 3.0.1.

He has to have a JB 3GS on an untethered JB to use those custom ipsw's.
Its not as simple.
What would be the easiest route?
Can I download 3.1.2 from http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/iphone-downloads/ and update his 3.01 and use blackra1n?

You got a tethered or untethered JB?
If you dont have SHSh's saved for the firmware you want to restore/update to you wont be able to update to anything but the latest firmware thats out right now. 4.0

He'd have to JB it first on the stock 3.0.1 that he's in.
Then he can update to custom 4.0 IPSW created with pwnage.
Maybe JB it first with blackrain and then go thru the pwnage 4.0 IPSW.
Im not 100% but you're prob right.
