i just got a new iPod and updated to 5.1. can i jailbreak? or is the tethered version available and i have to wait now for an updated untethered version?

i found that i can jailbreak tethered. but if an untethered is about to come out should i wait or would it matter...would it be easy to switch to untethered when it comes out?
