Jailbreak and backup restore help.

Hey guys. Was just wondering if anybody could help me here. Say if i was to jailbreak my iphone 3GS now and then when 3.1 came out and i backed up my phone before i installed a jailbreak on 3.1 would it restore from back up succesfully or would i have to create a new phone? I dont want to lose my messages and photos/videos in the camera roll, im not to fussed about contacts as i have them backed up anyway in my address book.
