Mod: Sticky request....

I found myself Linking this thread real often, can we have a Mod review it and maybe consider it for a sticky? If there is any requirement for an edition or maybe a recommendation for an addition I would be more than happy to add/edit it. :D

Just wanted to do a friendly bump to the Guide so all new comers have a chance to read it, and please post all the new questions or Guide you would to see to be added, anything iOS5 or iP4s related that could be relevant.

------------------------- Frequently Ask Questions -------------------------

Is Jailbreaking illegal? really hot discussion about it everywhere you look, all we got is that in USA, the library of congress recently rule that Jailbreaking doesn’t violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Keep in mind that even if the act itself doesn’t, user may incur on non legal or gray area activities if they chose to, also Apple Warranty is void by it.

I'm new to jailbreaking, so thanks a ton for the info you posted.

Just one thing... I haven't read through all the posts, but since this is still here, I'm assuming no one has pointed this out yet...

It wasn't the "library of Congress", just "Congress":):)

Updated nov 1/11

UPdated a couple of questions, and added a note for the SHSHs Blobs on IOS5+.

Please post or request any additions, corrections or suggestions so I can update it. :D

Thanks SO Much for the thread. I am surprised it isn't stickied! /hint

I have never jail broke my phone but after seeing a tease of IntelliScreen and the change to the notification screen I may do it just for that functionality.

I was curious about how the phone interacts with the Apple App Store and iTunes and it was answered!

Thanks and I am now waiting for the release of the new JB.

I am not sure if it was mentioned as I am still reading threads, but will iCloud functionality continue to work?

Correct, iCloud is just Like iTunes, it doesn't really know or care if the iDevice is JB or not, it will work just the same way.

Very cool. Thanks.

I am sure this is a non-issue. But are there any security concerns? Just thinking of my accounts and their passwords and I do use a banking app on my iPhone. How does a person ensure that nothing is collecting that sort of information? Are the JBs open source where someone could look over what it actually is doing? I would guess it isn't as they would want to protect their investment of time and effort.

I am reading up on Cydia so I will probably get my question answered. :)

Edit:

Ok, after some reading basically Cydia is an App Installer that is used to install apps on a Jailbroke iPhone?

To Jailbreak you basically (I am guessing, as I am still reading) update some libraries (for lack of a better word) that puts certain restrictions on the iPhone (such as forcing apps to come from the AppStore)?

All of the normal functionality is handled as normal parts of iOS?

The cool parts of a Jailbreak are basically other apps that replace certain "built-in applications" such as the notification center among of course the other productivity apps like OpenSSH etc. Cydia is just used to allow these apps to be installed?

My incorrect assumption in the past was that a Jailbreak was almost the entire iOS rewritten.

However, it might be easy for a unscrupulous programer to have an app and perhaps include a capability that could impact the security of personal information.

So just like one should be cautious installing anything on the computer at home, a jailbroken iPhone requires more vigilant awareness of what is installed.

Also, with JB do you lose any functionality with the Ecosystem? iBooks, Game Center, Find my Phone....
Please correct me if I am wrong on any count, as I want to be sure of what I do in the future in regard to this.
