Have read the FAQs but still have a few questions:

My iphone was 1.1.2 OTB and have upgraded to 1.1.3 then 1.1.4.

All I want to do is jailbreak it.. I do not want to unlock.

    • Will both iliberty and pwnage allow me just to jailbreak? I think yes.. but will I still need to build IPSWs?
    • Will this "downgrade" anything in the process?
    • If it goes tits up and the iphone needs restoring... does itunes use a recent backup or would you loose all contacts etc?
    • Do Apple honour warrenty claims on jailbroken phones?
    • Does jailbreaking nuke the phones content.. or will it be left in original state?

As you can see Im just a little worried about screwing it up!

Well every program with jailbreak whether its ZiPhone, iLiberty, or Pwnage. The only program you need to build custom ipsw's is Pwnage, the others just do what you want after the phone is good to go with the normal firmware. If you use ZiPhone, you need to make sure you go to advanced preferences and make sure ONLY jailbreak is checked and do it. If you dont, your bootloader will be downgraded. Im not sure about iLiberty but I dont think it will downgrade. If you have a Mac, I would give Pwnage a try. It is the safest way and will not downgrade anything. If your phone needs to be restored, after the restore is over, it will ask you if you want to load your phone or setup as a new phone. If you pick it to load your phone, everything will stay as long as it is somehow synced. Like I had my music on a playlist, bookmarks in IE even though I use Firefox, Contacts with Outlook and the rest is saved when you sync. Any form of jailbreaking or unlocking voids the warranty, but if you are just jailbreaking, you are in luck because you can just restore and then take it to the AT&T store if anything goes wrong while if you unlock, you are screwed because Apple only takes back iPhones with an AT&T contract. All jailbreaking does is open up the iPhone's file system and put Installer on your phone which is treated just like normal app. It does nothing to your phone that would screw anything up as long as you have your stuff backed up, if anything would go wrong, you could just restore and get everything back... Whew that was long

Thank you for this explanation. I've been researching for a while and I was still unsure about jailbreaking. I think I confused the risks of unlocking with jailbreaking. Your explanation was great, and iLiberty worked great.
