If your device is on 4.1 or 4.2.1 use Greenpoison.

I tried greenpoison 3 times before I switched to redsnow. Redsnow did it fast the first time no problems.

Check out the website listed above. Use redsnow, it's the easiest program. Then follow the guide.

I suggest not jailbreaking your iPod Touch 4G on 5.0.1 because it's tethered. I let you read up on the literature on why tethered jailbreaks are not good and can be annoying then an untethered.
