My daughter and son both jailbreak. They are trying to talk me into jailbreaking so I can customize my iPhone. It's tempting, but how do you know the apps you get are safe, I have some important info stored on my phone and would worry if it's safe?

If there were unsafe software in the main Cydia repositories, don't you think we would have heard about it by now?

The repositories are maintained by people who donate their time to the community. Cydia has several main repositories that are all verified by the community.

Just don't add any sources to Cydia.

There's definitely nothing malicious in Cydia. I think what the OP means is if a (non-malicious) Cydia app were to, somehow, "break" and wreak havoc with the rest of his iPhone. Jailbreaking--like anything--is a risk, one that definitely has more positives than potential negatives. Like most "unconventional" tech stuff (and life in general), though, jailbreaking is only as good as the person doing it.
In other words, be careful and you'll be fine.

I read it that he has important information and doesn't want anyone spying on his stuff. But if he's worried about losing the data, then he should be making backups with iTunes regularly anyway, regardless of whether or not he's jailbroken.
