if you use a mac you need pwnage tool if you use windows you need blackra1n. there are guides for both on iclarified.

It's more powerful than either redsn0w (which doesn't support 3.1.2 I believe) and blackra1n as Pwnage gives you more options.

It only gives you the option to unlock by putting the old baseband onto the new firmware as that has been unlocked. You dont have to install ultrasn0w (which unlocks it) you have to jailbreak before you can do any unlocking
