...If anyone wants to use applications other than firefox with this, just go to the network preferences and click the advanced button, go to the proxies tab, choose manually from the drop down and check SOCKS Proxy on the left, finally enter the iPhones IP and port 1080 into the appropriate text fields...

has anyone been able to get this system-wide proxy to work? i can get it work in individual apps, but it doesnt seem to work system-wide.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you completely that the entire situation is completely ridiculous. Unfortunately, in the States here, every cellular carrier that I know of has fine print in their terms of use agreement that you sign with your contract which can be summed up as, "We can cancel your service or any part of your service for any reason or no reason at all!"

So the first step is raising a red flag by extreme data usage, AT&T then looks at what you're doing, notices your usage patterns aren't that of a smartphone, then they cancel your data plan. If you're lucky they'll notify you that they've dropped your data plan, if you're unlucky you'll have a $600 bill from checking your email a few times.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a single person who thinks that the way the cellular carriers in the US work are ethical, fair to the consumer, or anything like that.

Unfortunately, we don't have much choice. AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint all have the buying power to just absorb any competition that offer better rates. Alltel was getting spry with the cellular market offering plans that were a little too good drawing customers away from the big 3. Not a problem, 28 billion dollars later they're now a part of Verizon!

It will probably stay this way until there is some kind of open WiMax network and VoiP phones that operate on WiMax for pennies on the dollar compared to cellular. Or, in other words, not for a very long time.

Tethering speed is TWICE that of my Sprint Expresscard at my home location and equal to the Expresscard's speed at my job.

Home:
EX720 Card: 860
iPhone 3G: 1689

I can even use the Safari browser on my MBP or my Powerbook or use them both at the same time with no other physical connection to the iPhone 3G. I don't worry about power cause I usually am near an AC outlet, or just connect the iPhone to either laptop to keep it charged via its included cable.

So yeah, I'm a very happy camper and will probably get rid of the Sprint Expresscard sometime next week.

can you get in trouble if you tether with the iphone when at the moment you are not even able to tether without jailbreaking?

in other words, even if you wanted to pay for the tethering service, you are unable to as the iphone does not officially support it.

as far as att knows, iphones are officially incapable of tethering right? so they cant say you were tethering

maybe i make no sense lol

You are totally correct on the "This is an iPhone forum and thread, not a "mine is better than yours" something out of the 3rd grade thread" part, but if you would have read the first 2 lines...You know where i said i wanted to see how many of you dummies were amazed that you could "tether" your phones?! And i do agree on you that WinMo is a piece of crap, i also stated that further down. I only use it because it is the most productive and compatible of all mobile operating systems out.
Wow, man, I just finished reading this thread and I must say I am disgusted at your level of Apple hating. You have been tethering for 2 years, right? Well I have been using my Verizon Treo to tether to my Macbook pro for nearly 5 years. BUT, because of how sh*ty the Treo is compared to my new Iphone 3g and my Air there is no substitute. It works better, it looks better(by far) and is just way more cooler. MacCrackAttack, why don't you leave this forum alone for all of us that respect the product. Do you really think Apple is the only manufacturer to stagger their technology????? In mine and many others opinion throughout this thread I think you should express your Apple envy elsewhere. RESPECT the most intuitive product built.

"Warning - Tethering your iPhone is against the iPhone data plan terms. AT&T could slap you with huge fees if you overuse this. I recommend only using it during emergencies. "

what do they mean overuse?

I'm sure most know this by now but Nullriver has a tethering app called Netshare on the iTunes App Store. Works well on my 3G iPhone, well, not perfect but it's a decent App.

So you don't have to Jailbreak to tether anymore.

EDIT: I have noticed however that Netshare has only half the speed of Jailbreak tethering at my location. It's even twice the speed of my Sprint Expresscard as mentioned before.
