I currently have a 4gb iPhone activated for AT&T and I am thinking of upgrading to a 3G Iphone, in turn, I'd like to unlock my phone and sell it. I have viewed videos online and read many tutorials, however, most deal with out of the box new iPhones. I am still not sure if the process is still the same for an already activated iPhone. Upon restoring the phone using iTunes it automatically reactivates it. I was wondering if it's due to my sim card still being in the phone. I plan on using ziphone to activate and unlock it. Follow up question.. Once it is unlocked, is swapping sim cards sufficient for using it with another carrier? or would it need more steps or programs.

    okey, here's the deal.

if you have another Mac, do it on that, because iTunes might safe the activation state.
if you do not have another mac, download the IPSW (you may already have it on your computer, search for "iphone 1.1.4" with spotlight), plug out your internet (or turn of airport) and do the following.
remove your SIM, go into DFU mode (hold power+home until you see the apple, release the power but hold the home until you see "connect to itunes).
connect it to iTunes, select "restore" and restore it to 1.1.4.
after the popup "your iphones will restart" or such, unplug the iPhone and wait till it starts. the Activate screen should come.
you can then force quit itunes (and "iTunes Helper" using activity monitor) and your PwnageTool to unlock the iPhone.

alternatively you could use ziphone. it is easier, but may brick your iPhone.
see here for a tutorial using pwnage tool
