OK, I'm a cheap bastard (I should say I have a 1y/o that's eating/******** me out of money and is going into daycare next month $$$) but I'd love an iPhone. (my Dad has one, loves it, and has offered to pay the first $200 towards the hardware) I'm wondering if I were to buy an iPhone outright, and use an AT&T sim card in it, but w/o any data plan, what would work when out of range of a WiFi network?

I don't see myself using a lot of data when away from WiFi EXCEPT for the GPS/Maps, but how much of that needs data? Is that DLing the maps using data on the fly, or are some of the maps built into the system? If I didn't have a data plan are there any other map/gps options that would work w/o data? My situation is I really don't want to (or can afford to) spend the $30/month on data. I don't see myself using it tons (it would be nice, but not $30 nice) beyond the gps, so if I could have that while in the car, then WiFi elsewhere I'd be fine.

I'm looking for the best combo of in car GPS, MP3 player (we already have 3 ipods in the house), palm type device and phone. The iPhone seems to be one tempting option if I can get around the $30 data plan and only use those features on a WiFi connection. But will I also lose the ability to use it as a GPS?

Why did this have to go in the hacks? It's nothing to do with jailbreak, or even unlocking.

And you'll have to ask with your carrier if any form of data, GPS etc is available without the data plan, but I doubt it.

getting an iPhone without a data plan is nearly impossible, and requires a LOT of hassle and luck (and even then they can add it back on whenever they want to once they realize you cheated them out of the terms of your contract)

the only way to avoid the data plan is to buy an original iPhone (no 3g no GPS) on ebay (for a ridiculous price most likely)
then you will not be required to have a data plan
(this may also work for 3g iPhones purchased on ebay, but I'm not sure)

there is an app in the appstore that keeps its maps on the flash memory and doesn't have to download (it's $20) but you must purchase both a US east and US west if you want the entire country (so that's $40)

<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=293124191"><img height="15" width="61" alt="XRoad Co., Ltd." src="http://ax.itunes.apple.com/images/badgeitunes61x15dark.gif" /></a>

If you don't have a data plan, you're going to get charged crazy amounts of money even if you only use the Maps app. The only way to prevent this is to call AT&T CS and have them place a WIX block on your line which prevents all data from being transferred to/from your device.

It will still work with WiFi but you'll have to find another way to get around away from the house. Also, in order to use the iPhone w/o a data plan you have to actually fool AT&T into believing you're using a different phone, which can be a bit of a PITA.

so if I were to be using an iPhone on AT&T, but w/o the data plan, basically anytime the iPhone tries to use anything data like, it'll use the dumb phones plan (pay for data I assume?) so the charges will eventually add up to way more than $30 in a month? Am I understanding that right?

But I could possibly setup that cheap phone's SIM card/account to BLOCK all data, then it might work? If that's the case, would it still work over WiFi when that's available? If I understand this right, and I can DL the maps as mentioned, this might be the option for me...

Also, in order to use the iPhone w/o a data plan you have to actually fool AT&T into believing you're using a different phone, which can be a bit of a PITA.

I would be getting their crappiest samsung "free" phone, then putting that SIM into a 3G iPhone I buy off Ebay (or elsewhere). So what's/why is it hard to convince them it's another phone?

Thanks for the help, this is exactly what I'm after, just trying to see what the potential pitfalls are before I decide. :)

Doesn't matter what phone you buy or what SIM card you use, when you take the SIM card and put it into a 3G iPhone, you'll get billed as a 3G iPhone $30 a month data plan. There's no getting around that.

You need to have a data plan on AT&T. Things like Voicemail, etc use data.

Honestly, if you cannot afford the data plan, I would skip on the iPhone and maybe just use an iPod Touch. Also, consider this: Should you lose the iPhone or if it breaks, you would need to buy one at full retail. So if you purchased the 8GB for $199 and lost it a year form now, you'd need to spend about $399 for a new one.

It sounds like, from what dccorona says you could get that app, download the info and not need data.

there is an app in the appstore that keeps its maps on the flash memory and doesn't have to download (it's $20) but you must purchase both a US east and US west if you want the entire country (so that's $40)

IF that is true, I can tell you that a 2G iPhone could very well be the answer to your question. IF you dont have that much music or can sync and add/delete songs to your needs, as it is only available in the 8GB size.

I have been using a jailbroken 2G phone for over a year with no data plan. I use NO DATA!! I have it blocked from my account so I dont have to worry about the phone doing its thing and getting crazy charges. I have never received any warnings or notices about needing or having to have a data plan. I have never informed them that I changed to a iPhone, but they can tell from my IME number that I have one. I can tell because on my account page it shows up in my devices that I am using that phone.

Thats not a guarantee, but as long as you are not using ANY data, I dont think they are going to try to add it to you. BUT thats just my idea, based on my 14 months of service with my personal iPhone without data and receiving NO warnings or ANY questions at all. I believe their system looks for accounts with a lot of data usage that could be coming from an iPhone that has a regular/cheap data plan and then try to make them change. Again, thats only a guess.

Good luck

I can confirm this as I have used a 2G for over a year with no data plan However, I am trying to find out if I can do the same thing with a 3G one, since I have filled up my 8GB one.

getting an iPhone without a data plan is nearly impossible, and requires a LOT of hassle and luck (and even then they can add it back on whenever they want to once they realize you cheated them out of the terms of your contract)

not really impossible, difficult perhaps. Just depends on what youre willing to pay. Craigslist and eBay are best places to find one.

You need to have a data plan on AT&T. Things like Voicemail, etc use data.

I dont know how different a 2g phone is from a 3G phone, but Voicemail does not HAVE to use data. At least on a 2G phone. I have done exactly what he is wanting to do on a 2G for over a year. Now the "Virtual Voicemail" or whatever it is called, does need to use data, but regular voicemail does not. If functions as any other cell phone does, if there is no network/internet access available.

Honestly, if you cannot afford the data plan, I would skip on the iPhone and maybe just use an iPod Touch.

Why would he want to carry a phone AND a touch if he can just carry one?....

As far as GPS goes you will need data or maybe the that app that was mentioned before would allow you to download/access data when you are on Wi-Fi and not require data when you are away from it. IDK, as I have never used it.

so if I were to be using an iPhone on AT&T, but w/o the data plan, basically anytime the iPhone tries to use anything data like, it'll use the dumb phones plan (pay for data I assume?) so the charges will eventually add up to way more than $30 in a month? Am I understanding that right?

Yes, that is correct.

You can do exactly that. It will work. I have been doing the same thing for more than a year. However, I cannot comment on the map aspect, as I have not used it.

THIS is what I am trying to get confirmation on myself. I want to upgrade to a 3G but want to know if I can use it the same as my current 2g without a data plan. Blocking and NOT USING any data whatsoever. Can anyone confirm this?

I realize if it is not unlocked or jailbroken and you try to activate over the phone or online you cannot get around it.

BUT if it is jailbroken/unlocked can anyone confirm if the 3G can be used like I am currently using my 2G??...... I simply need more storage, that is the only reason moving to a 3G

ANYONE????.....

Please?....

Not totally true. A lot of people do get away with this. Its all over the forums, people saying they cancelled their data plan and have not had it put back on. I cancelled my 3g data plan and tempoarily switched to a nokia candy phone for a week. Ive been using my sim in my iphone for the past 2 months without a data plan. Though, a day to my billing cycle I switch back to the nokia untill my next bill is generated, then im back on the iphone. It can work.

Jailbroken phone

I would just like to add some helpfule information about the jailbroken iphone 3g! If you are wanting an iphone but DO NOT want to pay the xtra $30 bucks a month to keep it then why not try buying a jailbroken one from ebay! I did and I love it! I received it, put my existing AT&T sim in it and no problems what so ever! All yo9u have to do to make sure that you don't get charged internet or data fees is disable your 3g! Go to utube and type in "HOw to disable 3g on iphone and you will get a hundred different ways to do it which is really easy! Took me maybe 2 minutes and a few steps on my iphone and I have had it for months and am happy to say I don't pay one cent for data services! I just use the wifi when I want to go online. The wifi range isn't very far but you can go to the app store and download a lot of free gps lites or maps. Most helpful is the yellowpages app! It's free and gives you a ton of info about a place you are trying to find!
The iphone is an amazing and fun phone to use! It might cost you anywhere from $400 and up to get a quality phone off ebay but you will save in the long run because you won't be charged the data fee! Check into it! Like
I said, Mine works just fine!

I really want a Porsche. My dad has one and it's sweet. He would probably help with the down payment but I'm smart enough to realize what I want and what I need are two different things. Buy your kid toys instead so he doesn't turn out to be a serial killer.

Hi guys..

i have an at n t connection right now.. and i m using a nokia simple phone.. without data plan .

Kindly please tell me.. i dont want any data plan to be used..

I have wifi which i use it all time.. i dont need any data plan from at n t... this thing can be solved simply??

i have the same dilema. im actually really confused about all of this unlock and jailbreak lingo.

All i want to do is avoid at&t's outrageous data plan. I want to know if theres a way to get around it by jailbreaking the phone after i buy it off at&t? I want to still be under their plan but w/o the data charges. I wont be using any of the GPS or web surfing features i just want the Ipod feature and the normal phone features

AT&T subsidizes your iPhone to the tune of $400 with the understanding that you will subscribe to a $30/month data plan. Buying a subsidized phone with no intention of holding up your end of the bargain is unethical.

AT&T will give me the iphone for 50 bucks, along with a 30 dollar data plan. Are you saying theres no way to avoid this without unlocking the phone?

Oh god there is the ethical police again. iPhones these days cost less than 150 to make. The rest of the $400 subsidized amount is pure profit. Sorry I have no pity for apple or at&t.

Anyway to the OP, if it is too much of a hassle to fool AT&T go to tmobile (like the previous poster saying he puts his sim car a day before the bill-jeez too much imo). A friend was hooking up his 3g and not even 5 mins, he checked his account and the at&t network recognized his phone as an iphone. Its says on line your phone is a 3g. Not sure if he was gonna be charged at the end of the monh, but anyway, I unlocked his phone and he is now with Tmobile w/o data. I have the 5.99 plan on tmobile with my 3gs, and another friend has a 3gs with the $15 dollar plan with tmobile as well.

Maps and data work on tmobile edge; I also have tomtom on my phone so its full gps is not effected by the lack of 3g internet.

i would really rather not switch carriers. my main question is if there is any possible way to keep at&t from billing me for a data package. i will not use it for GPS or the web browser i just want it for the simple fact of having a phone and an ipod for a low price

I'm saying if you don't want the $30 plan, buy the phone at full retail price and take it to another network. AT&T doesn't owe you a cheap iPhone, and you attempts to cheat them out of one without keeping up your end of the bargain are wrong.

if everyone in the world thought of what was right, this forum wouldnt exist and there would be world peace.

i am in no shape financially to afford nearly any phone at full retail, im looking for upgrade prices. other forums talk about WIX blocking, would this avoid them charging me with a data package?

you can get a

2g OR a touch anything else you risk being billed by AT&T end of story. They will be able to tell if you have a 3g or 3gs might be a few months but they will catch up to it. just the way it is!

If you can't afford the conditions of upgrade pricing, you can't afford it. Why do you thing AT&T owes you a cheap phone?

there is a lot of misinformation in this thread.

1. you either have unlimited data or you dont.

it is possible to not have data, you have att block the data on your account, then you can only use the wifi.

2. the original 2g iphone can be found for 150-200$. not ridiculous amounts.

3. you don't have to jailbreak or unlock
