there is a lot of misinformation in this thread.

1. you either have unlimited data or you dont.

it is possible to not have data, you have att block the data on your account, then you can only use the wifi.

2. the original 2g iphone can be found for 150-200$. not ridiculous amounts.

3. you don't have to jailbreak or unlock

I have a 2G that is not activated and I want to add it to my existing AT&T account as a new line without a data plan. I have another phone that has a simm that I can use to add the line to account with AT&T and then switch the simm to the Iphone after I put data block on. My question is how does one activate an Iphone without getting tagged with a data plan? I called AT&T CS and talked to them and they insisted that I had to have a data plan with a 2G Iphone.

Go into the AT&T store. Activate the phone (not the iPhone). Ask for a data block. Go home. Take the sim card out and put it in the iPhone. Plus it in to iTunes and activate it. Done.

Thanks, that I can do. I did not know that activating through Itunes is completely independent of AT&T activation.

This doesn't work with the iPhone 2G. Only 3G. 2G WILL force you into a 2 year contract w/ AT&T. therefore you should just hacktivate it. If you activate it normally with itunes, u'll be forced into data plan and 2 year contract.

I'm wondering if I were to buy an iPhone outright, and use an AT&T sim card in it, but w/o any data plan, what would work when out of range of a WiFi network? I don't see myself using a lot of data when away from WiFi EXCEPT for the GPS/Maps, but how much of that needs data?

I've never heard of anyone doing this, but a few searches claim it is possible, but remember there's a risk they'll see the phone on the network and begin charging you for it.

So while it may be possible, it's a huge risk to save $30 a month and there's not that many knowledgeable people out there to walk you through the process if something doesn't work. Also remember just because it works today doesn't mean it'll work tomorrow, things seem to change so fast in the iPhone world, one little update and whoops now you're getting a bill for the past twelve months.

Most the GPS programs I've used on the iPhone require data because instead of installing 1+ gb of data they download google maps on the fly. Tomtom might be the one exception, you'll have to find one that says it's compatible with the Touch to be sure.

I'm in the same boat as you are. I want no data plan. Just ignore the people who starts preaching to you about morals. Check out the method of having no data plan that I was asking about:

Looks like you've done your research BrioCloud, good luck to you. Just ignore the people that give you a hard time:

Incorrect. Most turn-by-turn GPS programs load the map data completely onto the phone. The ones that don't (like ATT Navigator) download their own maps on the fly not Google Maps. Apple's App Store rules specifically state that downloading GMaps for turn by turn is not permitted.

It is Possible. Thanks to SPaceKitty I have now an Iphone/gophone. Only problem is .....when my buds text me...it costs me $0.20 . THat what sucks the most. My wife only calls me really unless I know my homies have AT&T. THe first 2 weeks was horrible. I must have went through like 3 $15 cards. Its better now. GoodLuck

Getting GPS on a jailbroken AT&T prepaid service.

I can't figure out how to post a new thread on this topic so I'm forced to post it as a reply.

I want to get an iphone with GPS on a prepaid plan but AT&T told me that they don't offer GPS on their prepaid iphone plans. I was wondering if jailbroken means that I can get GPS on an AT&T prepaid plan that ordinarily would not be offered. I've been getting conflicting answers and was wondering if you could shed some light on this for me.

Are you saying that its not the phone that is activated, but the sim card? I thought its the phone that is activated WITH the sim card and its that phone that you can use. I didn't know its the SIM card that is activated and can be used on any phone (including an iphone).

Yep, been using my iPhone 4 on GoPhone for a long time already, and previously used both my 3G and 3GS models on it as well.

I actually find the total monthly cost quite acceptable. I rarely talk on the phone so the 10 cents per minute is actually a bargain (as opposed to a flat monthly fee like the $75 plan), I never text through the carrier (I use Google Voice), and even though I do pay the $20 a cycle for 100MB data it still comes out FAR cheaper than even the low-end contract AT&T iPhone plan would be, especially with all the taxes and BS fees they tack on.

So yes it is entirely possible, and yes, 3G works. I believe it is throttled compared to the postpaid customers but it is fast enough for me, much better than EDGE speed.

PS if any one has a grandfathered GoPhone SIM with unlimited Medianet working I'm interested. Hit me up.

Activating A Phone And Put SIM Card In Iphone

Wait a minute! You suggested to go to AT&T and activate "a phone," then put the SIM card into the iphone. This would entail BUYING an AT&T phone FIRST, so what's the benefit of that? If you return it, there's a restocking fee, plus they could de-activate the service since you "don't have a phone anyway."

You don't even need to do that. SIMs are available for $5 on eBay and if you are nice, you can walk right in to an AT&T store or kiosk and ASK for a SIM. They might make you put some money on it (you're going to need to anyway) and you should get the SIM for free. There's no need to buy a phone.
