I live in Japan and hate My Number system. Big brother is here to stay in Japan.
I think your opinion relies on a fallacy.

Big brother can also track you through multiple pieces of ID and just aggregating into a file with a master number.

Such would be no different from My Number except the individual would still be fumbling with multiple numbers and cards while the government had a virtual one.

Consolidating it on the user side doesn’t really change tracking on the government side much but possibly does reduce duplication and mistakes.

Ahh, see. It's always the "criminals" that have something to worry about, not the law-abiding citizens who cheerfully do whatever they're told. They have nothing to fear.

Digital currency is a slippery slope

Money has been digital ever since you could use an ATM.

Cash isn't going away. The central banks in every country continue to create coinage, including commemoration coins, bars, etc

Congrats to them.. We need more US states on board. California of all places should have been there long ago, instead we have another app that doesn't really work all that well and no Wallet support

And STILL no drivers license for the wallet. California lEaDinG tHe wAYy… 🙄

If you are a foreigner living in Japan, it is not an option.
Based on their official guide, you can apply for the card as soon as you get your resident record (Juminhyo) processed and they send you your ID number. Unless you’re in the country temporarily for travel etc. you should be eligible as long as you’re legally living in Japan.

people forget (or ignore) a national id system in america would likely disenfranchise millions of people from voting and doing other things now requiring identification

Why should it? The U.S. basically already has a national ID system with the SSN even though it’s not used as an ID. If the federal government can find a way to integrate a national ID into the SSN system and make it optionally work as a drivers license for drivers, I don’t see how this would be an issue.

Damn, when did they make it official that you have to?
They wait until you have to do something like transfer money or something. Not a mandate (per say), but...they make it very inconvenient if you do not (or you cannot do some things). I understand the rational behind it, but EVERYthing will be linked to it with just one number or card. Not a fan, being in tech for years. Rule #1: Never put your eggs in one basket. If issue, it messes up everything. But times have changed and convenience or lack of effort is the rule: The least amount of work or effort is now the ideal.

It has been a bag of headache. The government messed up with it already and has publicly made an apology saying that they will "do better". Concept is understandable (one number or card to rule the world), but in practice has its problems with potential future issues. Everything is moving to "one world" something, so Big Brother is happy again.

well then you should do some research on the effects of card requirements on poor people and minorities instead of just saying

“i don’t see how this would be an issue”

Your passport (that you apparently don't have) isn't digital.

Well sure it is, what's all that stuff they pull up from scanning it at the border? They just don't give me the electronic copy.

No, there's no digital national ID card. But the point I was replying to is that there is already a federal identification card in the US.

And yeah to your point it will probably be a long time before I can add it to Apple Wallet.

Well, yes, passports have been digital for a long time now, in that sense — but that's not what the topic of this post is, is it?

It may not take long for something like this to be added to the Wallet, the bigger question is — where will it be accepted. I mean those that have their digital state id, only benefit from it at a handful of airports, so it's a gimmick for now, sadly...

The card is for residents, including foreign-citizen residents, and used for insurance and taxes. All residents are required to "participate" in insurance and taxes. See https://www.kojinbango-card.go.jp/hpsv/wpmng/assets/pdf/download/pamphlet-for-foreigners-en.pdf
Yes, Also required if you transfer funds. The card is increasing for usage and is moving to link most information on the card user, including medical, passport info. etc. (and probably banking - i.e. postal if used- eventually. They want to make it "simpler", but not a fan of all info. linked to one source. Won't be long before other countries start to do the same type of system. Who knows..probably linked to one system eventually. A.I. will have fun with that one.

Individuals (working within governments or the private sector) having access to ALL of your data in one spot presents far more risks and worry for me. Maybe you're just more glass half full than me.
