At the 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, actor Jason Sudeikis won a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his leading role as the eponymous English soccer coach in Apple TV+ series "Ted Lasso."

Sudeikis' title character is a small-time college football coach from Kansas who is hired to manage a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer. The show has received positive reviews, with many viewers finding Lasso's unflappable positivity to be a welcome salve in the face of trying times.

This marks "Ted Lasso" star and executive producer Sudeikis' first Screen Actors Guild nomination and win. It comes on the heels of last month's success at the Critics Choice Awards, in which "Ted Lasso" won Best Comedy Series, Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Sudeikis, and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hannah Waddingham, sweeping all categories in which the series was nominated. Sudeikis also won Best Actor in a Comedy Series at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year.

At last year's Screen Actors Guild Awards, Apple TV+ earned its first SAG Award less than one year after its launch for hit series "The Morning Show," which was honored with Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for star Jennifer Aniston.

Ted Lasso has been renewed for second and third seasons, with the second season expected to premiere at some point in summer 2021.

He did indeed a good performance! I also liked the show very much. Nicely done.
Agreed! I never thought I would have liked this show but my partner and I were bored on a Friday so gave it a shot and ended up finishing most of it that weekend. It's pretty simple but really entertaining.

Watching the first episode or so, I was a bit nervous that with a couple of obvious villains that the season would soon become dark. I was looking for something just like this after watching edgier shows and engrossing movies to relax me before bed. Turned out to be so good, I've just completed running the whole first season three times! I've never done that before with any show, not even something as enjoyable as say Friends, which is on the same level as Ted Lasso with good character development without being mean.

I do like soccer so maybe adding say 90 seconds of actual field plays per episode might help the realism. At the moment, it is more like watching a comedy about boardroom antics of Amazon without integrating warehouse workers or driver stories. But not uncommon for a sitcom.

Still, a great, great show. Might watch it one more time just before season 2. Enjoyed every replay, and picked up some new bits each time. I did Google British slang a lot the first couple episodes.

What a well deserved win. Not usually one for any kind of gossip but I recently discovered Jason was going through what had to be a painful divorce while making this show. To me that makes his grounded positive outlook as Ted Lasso even more powerful. It isn't a show without pessimism, it's a show about choosing optimism when the deck keeps getting stacked against you.

It makes the divorce he goes through in the show resonate even more.

Lol, interesting word choice. Definitely had to look that one up.

That being said, I’ll echo what I’ve said every time a Ted Lasso article pops up, this show is incredible. If you haven’t seen it yet, turn it on now!

Great performance but mediocre, predictable show. Glad he won!

Eh I enjoyed it. It was one of those cheesy feel good type of shows. Didn’t get too involved in real life goings on, just some escapism. Which is really hard to come by nowadays.

I couldn’t think of one show that the world needed more in 2020 than Ted Lasso. The origins of the show and the pilot made by the NBC in 2013 explains a lot!

“In 2013, NBC Sports acquired the broadcast of the Premier League, England’s top-tier football league system. In order to bring some excitement to the broadcast, the network recruited their Saturday Night Live star, Jason Sudeikis, to run some promos as the original character, Ted Lasso.

This was a tactic to attract both loyal soccer fans as well as new viewers. NBC ran another set of promos the following year in 2014 which, like the first, went viral with over 20 million views on YouTube and helped the network create a strong fanbase out of the gate.”

The idea that Jason and his team took that and really added depth and humanity really says something.
