haven't sun released the java3d API as opersource now or something... I don't know, i remember reading something like that...

Java 3D and Java Advanced Imaging Update

When I researched the build engine for my project, I saw everything about "Java3D is dead". The general belief is it's not really, they "let go" a lot of the developers and it's on hold, but that's while they work out where Java3D needs to go in future, and whether it should exist at all.
Apple implementing Java3D support is nothing but a Good Thing. I've manged to get a spaceship generated in Maya moving backwards and forwards, a zoomed back camera with text that always faces it in the space of about 15 man hours (includes lots of reading!). Anyone starting in 3D should use this first IMHO.
But then again, I *am* a Java evangelist. Possibly because I'm a crap programmer

Does this have anything to do with sun's Java 3D desktop? I've seen the keynote presentation on Sun's website and it is way cool... It the first time I've hankered after a different OS rather than a mac in a very long time.
Does anyone know if apple is thinking about bringing 3D desktop features on-board? It would make for a very cool addition to the mac interface.

wow, hankering after a new os just after looking at a tech demo, that is something! TBH, the 3D desktop looks more hassle than it's worth, and there is so much more to an OS than a few nifty tricks... with MacOS X, form follows function... in the tech demo, the whole OS is nothing but a few neat graphical tricks without much thought put into what we would actually want to do with the technology.
I mean, who wants to, after ripping a CD, want a virtual representation of your CD on your screen, I mean, 99% of the time, the album COVER is where the art is, and the CD contains nothing but text... on a small screen, they would become unreadable...
some neat graphical tricks are evident, but seems of little use to me, except for the notes on the back of windows thing, that could be quite interesting, but does that mean if I just want o close a browser windows with a bit of text ont he back of it, i'd be asked if i want to save, don't save or cancel??? not the best place to put notes, you're better off using stickies!! don't you agree...
