Hello guys.

I got prompted with a "Java Update" (so it looked) dialog.

Accepted, and then at some point while loading/installing it prompted

"Password protected:"
and the word "Update"
while showing the "Java" cup logo.

Since Java is so popular for malware/spyware nowadays I'm pretty worried.

Does anyone know of this symptom ?

Unfortunately I did not get a screenshot of it while it was there 🙁

What Mac OS X version do you use? It has been a long, long time since I ever saw a Java update prompt, thus it may have been a ruse.
If you want to update Java, best go to the official source.

I guess you entered the password and completed the installation?

Sure. This one was triggered by Firefox, and I actually believe it was on the official "Do I have Java?" page ...

However .. I would like to rinse and search this laptop now if this seems utterly suspicious, because I think it really sounds like it ... What is the best online scanner for Mac-based systems ?

Use ClamXav.
