Can anyone list some songs that have really good trombone solos and a good funk jam type of feel? I don't want any lyrical songs, just straight up jams. I can't find anything.

You might want to try some Galatic as well. Those guys just flat out can play funk.

And I can't believe no one has mentioned Louis Armstrong yet! 😱 Also try to find some Greg Abate stuff. He's a local around here, my father taught him in middle school, he teaches a few classes at my college, and he's been nominated for a Grammy several times!

Take a look at what I have, then look on iTunes, especially the iTunes Essentials, they have some good charts in there. Also, find out if a local college or high school has a jazz band, and go to some concerts, you might hear something you like.

For some modern free-form jazz, I recommend Club d'Elf. It's great postmodern jazz with some turntables as necessary.

For their live shows, check out the Internet Live Music Archive for Club d'Elf. All of the music is free, but you'll want to convert it for iTunes. Try a program called xAct (search macupdate.com for that one) and xAct will turn it into AIFF, then let iTunes turn it into AAC or MP3. It sounds like a lot of work, but you get to start off with the original lossless file, so you have infinite options for compression.

As many have said there's a lot to "Jazz."

It's important to know that there's right now like 5 factions of jazz.

Traditional (Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Munk, Cannonball Aderly)
Contemporary a.k.a. Smooth (Chris Botti, Richard Elliot, Norman Brown, Pieces of a Dream)
Chill - a new format (Praful, Mocean Worker, Camiel, Soel)
New Age (Keiko Matsui, Acoustic Alchemy, Craig Chaquico, Third Force)
Quasi jazz - Light jazz (Kenny G (puke), Vanessa Williams, Donny Osmond, Anita Baker)

A coworker is listening to some Jazz on his iPod in the room I'm in right now. Sounds really good. Anyone have some reccomendations for Jazz tracks on iTunes? I'm gonna pick up a $15 card or two to grab a few tracks. It's a shame, really. Most of my music is electronica/rock. I'm not sure what is good to branch out into other genres.

If you like relaxed smooth jazz check out: Lee Ritenour: Wes bound (great jazz guitar album)

As mentioned before, a must have IMO is Miles Davis: Kind of Blue.

I also second most works from Oscar Peterson is worth checking out, he was one of the best jazz pianists of his time.
