@MuscleNerd
Think we've figured out a way to extend PwnageTool+limera1n+@comex hacks to untethered JBs for all future A4 firmwares :)

@MuscleNerd
Jailbreakers and unlockers should avoid today's 5.0.1 until a flow for downgrading to 5.0 is developed.

Did anyone else click through to see the "new" tweet? Am I the only one that sees the date on this one? 10/16/10??

Doesn't seem like any new news has been divulged, but I'm definitely ready for an untethered jb for my IP4.

huh? 2010? ios5 was just released this summer....your confused.

Maybe so, but jailbreakme leaked prematurely, the devs are tight on info.

In the first tweets musclenerd stressed that LOTS of work needed.

The nuance is that it still needs work, which might imply they are making progress. Besides that also working on a downgrade path, they are busy.

I'm happy with any info the devs care to share.

And that made comex finish the actual jailbreak in a couple of days.

The lack of jailbreak made me return my 4s.

Not entirely sure on why you did that.. better yet, you could have kept the 4s, and assuming you were upgrading from another iPhone, not activate the new iPhone until a jailbreak comes out.

That's where I am right now, with having a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 3G on 3.1.3, with my iPhone 4s not activated. When one comes out, should it come out, I'll activate it.

BL.

Actually he had been working on it for almost a year, it cut short the jailbreak window with a couple of days, so fewer people could jailbreak and the devs reveal less info because of it, all in all not a good thing.

Returning because no JB?? Sign of the times, instant fulfillment.
Patience is a virtue....

I don't think I'm confused...check the screenshot of the tweet. I know ios5 was released this year, but I don't think this tweet is related to the ios5 jb. I looked through MN's tweets from Nov 20 - today and this tweet that is being referenced as "new" is nowhere to be found.

I believe the date format for twitter is Day/Month/Year. That's where I got 2010. I maybe wrong, but it seems pretty straight forward to me.

I have totally been in love with the jailbreaks on all of my iDevices but I wouldn't return my 4S because the jailbreak isn't available yet. IMO 4S and 5.0 has kept me content over my iPhone 4.

no musclenerd has stated not to update past 5.0 at this time. anything past that is unlikely to have a untethered jailbreak for a while. they have already said the exploit is gone for 5.0.1. people just don't understand the work the devs do too 1. find the exploit and 2. come up with a simple and polished jailbreak experience. it could be months before the 4S has another jailbreak. however the Iphone 4 and 3GS still have tethered jailbreaks to look forward too. Also a little easier to jailbreak.

I'm pretty sure that it was pod2g that stated not to update to 5.+.

Here are my thoughts on this from another thread, I think the current firmware will be jailbroken at the same time as 5.0:

I'm not convinced that there won't be an untethered jailbreak for 5.0.1 or even 5.0.2.

I know about pod2g's cautionary tweet but as far as I can tell the dev team (and associates) were working on an untethered jailbreak for 5.0 that didn't rely on the well publicized exploit that was fixed in 5.0.1.

It would be pretty poor if the eventual jailbreak required 5.0 given that anyone that buys a 4S now will have 5.0.1 installed as stock. Has there ever been a major jailbreak that didn't break the current firmware? I have only been jailbreaking since 3.1.3 so maybe before then? Or my memory is failing.

I can't find any definitive information either way.

@pod2g pod2g
@hyperpowr the bug I've found is not closed AFAIK but will be tougher to exploit because @0xcharlie's bug is.

Yup, bug was not closed but tougher to exploit. I think they will be forced to go down the tougher route given the number of iPhone 4Ses that have the current firmware. That number is growing everyday because new phones come with 5.0.1 installed. I guess we will see what happens. Not jailbreaking the current firmware is sloppy because it doesn't cover the entire userbase. It also opens the door for an competitive (and more complete) jailbreak, potentially burning an exploit along the way. I'm sure there are politics going on right now.

A similar path of thinking, and as a complete and useless aside, I always wonder what the interaction between saurik and promenent jailbreakers is like. If I was saurik, I would want the current firmware broken, it would mean a larger number of jailbroken phones and greater profit through cydia.

I wonder if a jailbreaker (with an unreleased jailbreak) has ever leaned on saurik for a portion of cydia profit. Probably.

Yep, I'm sure people are lining up to do a lot of analysis looking for exploits then programming it all for no reimbursement. :rolleyes:

Okay, take exception to that point, that's fair. It wouldn't really need an different exploit. According to pod2g's tweet, it would just be more difficult.

We've had jailbreak competition similar to what I was describing, recently too. Jailbreaking tools released at short notice to protect an exploit.

Anyway, I don't think we will see a jailbreak for the 4S that is exclusively for 5.0.

Not likely, there was a pretty big hole in 5.0 that got fixed plus they warned over twitter not to upgrade to 5.0.1. 5.0.1 JB untether might take a while AFTER 5.0 comes out.
