I thought the stereotype was that a Jewish Mother would (a) feed you constantly and (b) make you feel guilty about everything you do.

Example: She gives you two shirts for your birthday. You wear one the next day. She says "You didn't like the other shirt?"

How did you know. The guilt drives me crazy. Especially during an arguement ie. "Ok Jason just hate me I'm the worst mom in the world" and other extreme reverse psychological things.

Oh and how she does stuff that's over the top and extreme that's supposed to 'protect me'. From what I have no idea but she makes it seem quite convincing.

This brings up a good point. How come there are no restaurants that serve Jewish comfort food. Whenever my friends have tasted brisket, noodle kugel, hamentashen, or even just bagels and lox they love it. I know you can get ok food at a deli but how come there are no high end versions? If anyone opens a restaurant with this theme remember - you heard it here first.

Oh, and yg17, I'm not the type to post pictures or any other ID.

There are SO restaurants that serve Jewish comfort food! If you ever come to Toronto, here are a few: Centre Street Deli, Bagel World (my favorite place for lox, cream cheese, cucumber on a giant twister bagel) Pancer's Deli, Yitz's Deli, Kiva's Bagels, and Mi-va-me (except that's Israeli comfort food).

I was just at Centre Street Deli on Sunday night for dinner with my family, including my Jewish mother- we had kreplach soup with matzo balls, a chicken knish with gravy, kishka with gravy, kasha with bow ties, an old fashioned smoked meat sandwich (the BEST smoked meat in the world), a roast brisket sandwich, potato salad, coleslaw and pickles, and we washed it down with a Cott's Black Cherry Soda.
THAT place is awesome.

If you ever go to Montreal, Snowdon Deli is the original Centre Street Deli before they opened in Toronto, they have the same recipes and pretty much the same food.

Basically, figure out where the Jews live, and you'll find the Jewish food.

Exactly.

Cf. Paul Watzlawick (1921-2007), The Situation is Hopeless, but not Serious (The Pursuit of Unhappiness).

One of the funniest books I've ever read.

The non-Jews (goyim as some would call them :D) always being excited about Jewish food has always intrigued me. When I used to not eat bread during Passover, back in elementary and middle school, I would have matzo in my lunch, and by the middle of Passover, I'd be sick and tired of eating it and would offer it up for grabs, and my non-Jewish friends would fight over it like a bunch of savages who never ate before. They love that stuff and I'm sick of looking at it

Although, I don't think I'd ever get sick of bagels and lox, latkas or kasha and noodles. I may have renounced my religion, but I sure as hell didn't renounce my religion's food :D

And yes, Jewish mothers are very good at the guilt trip. My mom gets me with that crap every time

Surely, I've been to the Centre Street Deli, granted it was a long time ago. But that's not the point. Those are all deli food. Why not a trendy restaurant? Here we have a trendy place that has mac and cheese on the menu http://www.jones-restaurant.com/ and they are always packed (although Jones does have brisket on their menu), but there is no Jewish themed restaurant. Probably because the health department would close it down due to all the shmaltz and sodium.

Anyways, watch some Woody Allen movies and enjoy the neuroses.:D

Somehow I think that's just a mum thing, and not specific to Jewish mothers :)

Why would anyone want to go to a trendy restaurant for Mac and Cheese? Besides, the mac and cheese is on the brunch menu- it's not like it's a $40 dinner entree at Jones. The dinner menu looked pretty normal to me.

It may be a deli, but it serves Jewish food. Latkas, knish, kiska, kasha, matzo ball soup, krepluch, brisket, smoked fish and meats, lox and cream cheese, bagels, chopped liver, etc, are all Jewish foods. And they serve that there. Why does it have to be a trendy restaurant? It's comfort food, and trendy restaurants aren't comfortable.

I know that there is a good sized Jewish population in Philly- I'm sure if you staked out a shul on a Saturday morning, and asked around, they'll tell you where to go (or arrest you for staking out the place :D).

BTW, my neuroses are just fine. My Jewish mother makes sure I don't forget them!

Certainly not trying to be nosy here, but your avatar combined with the Jewish mother is confusing...

And many mothers stereotypically use guilt to manage their kids - Many Catholics have that going on for sure.
