You guys seriously aren't able to use Apple Pay here? Am I missing something?

Apple Pay only works with credit/debit cards issued by a US Bank that has implemented the EMV tokenization standard. Australian (and Canadian, and European) banks haven't yet implemented this standard, so Apple Pay doesn't work for cards issued by those banks.

You apparently have a US bank-issued credit card. iPhone 6 users all over the world have reported that Apple Pay works, as long as they load a US bank-issued card (that supports Apple Pay).

They have to weigh the possible revenue based on the potential subscriber base against the effort.

35 million people live in Canada. The population of every larger european country is bigger than that. There's 60 million people in Italy, 80 million in Germany, 66 million in France. 64 million in the UK. So why should Apple prefer Canada just because it's closer? Trust me, even if Canada were on the other side of the planet, Apple execs could hear the whining coming from all the Canadians in this thread who think they deserve preferred treatment. Proximity is not a requirement for that.

I understand what you're saying but what about Mexico. One of the biggest countries in the western hemisphere and I don't hear much about them going into that market either. Sure Canada is smaller in population than some of the places Apple is aggressivly pushing into but there's no language barrier (most of Europe), there's a stable regulatory system (China) and it's fairly affluent (Africa). I just have a feeling that Apple is a bit far sighted and is overlooking good markets closer to home.

Actually I was told otherwise. Visa uses one type of terminal company and MC uses another and at the Staples I wasn't able to use the tap feature with my Visa as it would only accept tap payment from MC. I was able to use my Visa at Indigo.

I'm talking about those tap terminals where you simply tap your card and the payment goes through. I was not able to do so at the Staples as they told me their system only accepted tap payments from MC.

As a full-time customer service jockey at Canadian Tire, I can confirm that people with all three major brands of credit card (VISA, MC, Amex) and all manner of debit cards use contactless payment on their PIN pads every day. They started out with just the first two of those + Interac, and then added Amex into the fold…I'm thinking a year or so later via a software update. The hardware is the same across the board; it's just a matter of various businesses and banks making agreements with each other behind the scenes. If Staples said their system only worked with MasterCard, that simply means they haven't hashed it out with VISA and American Express yet. I even have credit cards from other countries (Australia, US, some Asian countries, etc.) work without issues—the only difference is that it often prints out a (now old-fashioned) signature slip for the customer to sign.

It wasn't Staples problem it was the company that handled the contactless terminals. Apparently that company only had an agreement with MC. I didn'tmean that the terminals were different, they are all NFC so the hardware is basically the same, it's the contracts with whichever credit card that are different.

Is there a limit on Apple Pay purchases in the US? I can use paywave up to A$100 here in Oz and above that use chip/pin.

Also how does apple pay differentiate between different cards? I have Amex and Visa and some stores have chip/pin/paywave but don't accept Amex.

Actually you can still use contactless above $100 in Australia but you need to enter a PIN.

That is imitation of Staples then so don't extrapolate Staples limited support and attempt to apply to everyone else.

It is not visa or mc who issues these terminals. There are many companies that have their own terminals which support NFC standards. It's up to them to support visa mc etc depending on their software and or merchant profile.

I tried using Pay at Office Max last night and the transaction was denied. After I paid another way the guy behind the register asked if I was trying to pay by phone. I said yes. He laughed a bit and said 'maybe we'll update our software some day to support this'. Stupid Office Max.

Yup I'm sure the checker at office max calls the shots there. Probably didn't have time to write the apple pay patch for their terminals in between scanning and bagging. LOL.

I still a major update to Apple Pay is coming some time in the spring of 2015. Eseentially, it will modify how Apple Pay works so it is fully compatible with the Osaifu-Keitai refillable prepaid NFC mobile payments system used in JAPAN, in effect you can now use your iPhone 6 for Mobile Suica and Rakuten Edy mobile payments.

Wait...what? I've been using this since arriving in Australia last weekend. No problems at all. US (Verizon) iPhone 6, but with Vodafone sim in while here.

You guys seriously aren't able to use Apple Pay here? Am I missing something?

Yes. The fact that you are using a US card with Apple Pay. There are no banks here that work with Apple Pay.

I doubt it.
WTF? Why?
