Can't wait for this...to flop.

seeing the last couple of products, not sure they can pull anything spectacular off anymore. I should probably hold my tongue untill ipad pro or whatever this surface copy will be like, or the apple watch. My bar is pretty low these days.

If they are working on a VR, bets are it will only only play videos from itunes, sync from itunes, and require itunes to boot

I'd love to see what apple do with VR. As a oculus rift owner and VR convert - it may only be at the devkit stage atm so it's understandable - but it's definitely not user friendly to get things working a lot of the time. :) (such is the nature of rapidly changing sdks, libraries and hardware specs I guess)

If Apple approached the field with their usual methodology I imagine it solving various issues in really elegant ways.

If VR takes off how facebook and Samsung hope it does I can see why Apple, and everyone else wants a foot in the door. It can be a wonderful thing.

Put on VR goggles.

Notices a Steve Jobs avatar roaming the halls.

Running to Steve and giving him a big hug and tattletaling on Apple for the crap junk they've been putting out as of late.

Take goggles off.

Crickets.

a better version of iOS that can better compete with Android in areas like more customisable home screens via 'Themes' and NFC APIs.

I agree until this point. I don't agree Apple needs/should/must/will do more customisable home screen via 'Themes', there are much better things to focus on improving iOS but this.

can't wait to be able to tinder R/L with eye movements. i don't think finding a date should require any physical effort whatsoever.

Apple posts a job opening and them suddenly a doomed technology, is now saved...

How many people actually have 3D in the world...? And how many movies are 3D compared to DVD's ?

Even Amazon tried it with their phone with multiple front facing cameras.

Sure, they'll probably be a market, but its not gonna be huge by any means.

And people here make fun of Google Glass.

People here also haven't hesitated to make fun of these. VR seems to be an area in tech in which there is very little partisanship.

Why does that guy have a C for an ear?

Apple should fix reality 1st..... before they go virtual

"You see, the real world is incredibly thick, so we created this revolutionary device that makes your reality thinner, and lighter than ever. The unibody aluminium makes this the strongest virtual world ever created as well."

Their own internal software teams must already use this. "Bugs? What bugs?"

I don't know why I always think of this when virtual reality comes up

I would be proud to wear Google Glass.

Wearing this Apple monstrosity people would laugh as your walking down the street.. :p They would all direct you to the pool.

It may be "like" Oculus, but it better be a much smaller form factor...

No one wants to look like a dork. Do they?

best post ever!

Oculus Rift works. It's awesome. It can be done. I'd be happy to see Apple enter the field, but Facebook doesn't seem to have screwed up Oculus, so I'm happy to leave it to Oculus too!

Eventually, it makes sense for the headset to be its own console (and Android would be a good OS choice for it). Right now, it's best tethered to a computer (or console) with big graphics power.

Samsung has the VR with the Note 4. Wonder if Apple's will be same just "better and smoother" Could be worse,Who knows.

Samsung beat Apple to this one. Kudos to them.

Oculus beat Apple AND Samsung and everyone else to real VR. Hobbyists even beat Samsung to using a phone as part of a VR headset. Then Google made Cardboard, and Samsung announced their thing. "Me too! Me too!"

Samsung just made an accessory, in their "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" way, that works with just one handset and then when you get a new phone, your headset becomes a paperweight.* No kudos for that.

* Or sooner, since app developers' interest in Samsung's headset is not likely to skyrocket. And since VR needs a lot of graphics horsepower, and that phone ain't gonna handle much detail. What looks good on a pocket screen doesn't look so good blown up so big it surrounds you! A hardware tech demo that nobody will use for long.

Thanks Captain Buzzkill. Sorry for getting excited.

Why get excited about something that would be years and years away IF it ever happens. It's silly how this site takes every little patent or job posting and acts like they mean that Apple will be releasing a related product next month.

If any of that were true, years ago the iPhone would have had a virtual keyboard, 3D display, video projector, NFC, and much more according to claims MacRumors has made. It's silly to invest in anything posted here as fact.

You don't know what you're talking about. Samsung and Oculus have been working together for a few years on VR; not against one another. Samsung does not only make the accessory for the Note 4 but they also supply the key ingredient which is the Amoled display tech. The Dev kit 2 display is literally a stock Note 3 display. And the upcoming consumer version will use either the Note 4 display or the up coming 4K 6" display that might be used in the Note 5. For the Gear VR head set Samsung has allowed Oculus low level access to the Note 4 hardware. When you plug the Note 4 it goes into VR mode.
Just look at the Note 4 display. It is considered the best display on the market. Samsung have been pushing the Amoled tech above what traditional LCD panels could achieve. It's no wonder why Oculus and Samsung are teamed up together. Apple is way behind what Samsung is trying to do and this is a panic move.

Not if but when VR hits it big a year or 2 from now people are going to be scrambling to get something on the market. People here want to compare today's VR to 20 year old technology (virtual boy) but these people never experienced current tech. If the consumer version of Oculus Rift provides the same experience as the Cresent Bay prototype who outside of graphic design companies will want to spend $1000 plus on a Apple computer?
I could even see Facebook designing a VR lobby so that you can actually meet your friends in VR. The possibilities are endless.

For virtual reality nothing beats lucid dreaming. You can literally do anything. There is no limit and it's hard wired in and through your entire body. My only gripe is the woeful devices that assist in training oneself.

Exactly! And Samsung has also announced this 360° 3D camera, super cool!

Google Goggles

No, Google should really be the one to come out with a VR product. They would be called Google Goggles of course.

VR is much more than 3D though. I'd say even the developer version of the Oculus Rift and Elite Dangerous on a fast PC is one of the most striking visual experiences out there at the moment. Maybe the mass appeal isn't there yet but if it keeps improving I can't see how it won't be.
