I remember when that's what they said about fax machines.
And zunes...

exactly. well put. And I for one hope it never happens. For the same reasons you site as the delay. You want something that works, you need control over the whole thing. No reason to associate your name and product with something you can't control
While I can't speak for everyone, for me this would be because while I'd love to be able to afford a $5000 computer and a $500 phone, my Samsung Palm phone is years and years old, and my 1.67 G4 Powerbook is only a little over a year old. I have tonnes of processing power already sitting in my basement in the form of linux servers and don't really NEED a new computer. However, if they came out with a good PDA phone that would work with my service provider (Bell in Canada), which is very very very unlikely, I would almost certainly buy it.I'm with you MM! How can only 9% want an 8 core Mac Pro while 34% want a friggin phone.
It wouldn't pay of. Most people don't buy windows and nor would they buy OSX. There are two options: they buy a computer that comes with Windows or they pirate Windows. A VERY small minority actually buys windows seperately. It would be the same with OSX.While thats a bit of an elitist attitude, there is not much different apple would need to do.
Drivers are already written for the hardware in many systems, you would be surprised.
As far as "Control" what can you do? Apple can only go so far as a hardware vendor, that bothers to make its own operating system. Would supporting additional hardware add headaches for them? Sure! But would the extra work pay off?
I think so, but what do I know?
"One last thing. Doesn't it annoy you when you're at the theater, and someone's phone rings?
... the big announcement is going to be a point upgrade to .Mac

That is a clue. Aren't we all tired of iThis and iThat?
How about bQuiet? A device that can turn off all cell phones within a selected radius, or in another mode, can beam in on a selected phone and zap it. This device would be more popular than any phone.
Imagine zapping the phones of teenage girls driving their lifestyle cars too close to you in traffic, silencing loud self-important calls of wanna-be important people, calls of any look-at-me cell phone users, calls in airplanes...
Limitless sales opportunity. Making the world less annoying for the rest of us. What could be better?

You might be surprised - A quick google revealed that Microsoft sold 850,000 RETAIL copies of Windows Xp within the first 2 months of availability. Thats nothing to shake a stick at.
I would guess windows retail sales probably rival total MAC sales. Remember, a very small minority of the VAST majority still equals ALOT of customers.
(Did that last sentence make sense?)![]()
Either way, I really hope that Apple never ever releases a standalone OSX for generic boxes. It would immediately kill the company.
So we should definitely poo poo whatever it is to guarantee success.I don't know what will be released tomorrow, but just for a little historical perspective leading up to tomorrow's keynote keep in mind that just a few years ago so many MR members at the time...
LAUGHED at the original iPod proclaiming "How dumb. Another MP3 player. This is destined for failure."
Then a few years after that when the iPod mini was released a whole lot of MR members at the time...
RIDICULED it because it was "too expensive" compared to the larger capacity, and larger footprint iPod. No one was going to buy the mini because it was a "rip off" and too "girly."
So if you feel compelled to rip the iPhone, if, when, announced, just keep that in mind. History doesn't treat Apple naysayers very well.
So you want a super fast small form factor headless mac that allow upgrades and the PowerMacs are too expensive. Sounds good, but unlikely, if I'm getting it right? You beat me to it. That's the only thing I've been dying for. I'm so frustrated right now by the current offerings.
Linux is great in the server market. The desktop is so so. I have ubuntu and it works, but doesn't compare to OS X. If Apple released it and it was very stable with the plethora of third party drivers then it could be a good thing. However, Apple would have to expect the support calls to quintouple and therefor I think unlikely. Not that I wouldn't want it, but I'm trying to be realistic and perhaps play devils advocate. Would certainly be interesting and welcomed by a lot of people.Linux builds do this quite well - Apple can do this. All the hardware out there is supportable. Apple doesn't need to control the hardware - that's an old paradigm. Just a Rosetta to talk to existing Win drivers.
What if they are going to release 10.5 to ANY Intel machine. That would rock things up
I would like to hear the argument for that.
