i sometimes wish he wasn't associated with Jon Stewart - therefore 'too liberal' for many viewers with a bias going in.

a good amount of the time, the central pieces in his show are nearly partisan-free. just good old fashioned in-depth journalism you can't usually find on major networks. admittedly, he does poke at conservatives way more in his quick assessments and zingers, but i'll withhold my opinion as to why that happens so frequently ;)

Great interview with Richard Clarke, (former National Security head for Clinton and Bush admins, was saying we needed to pay attention to Al Queda prior to 9/11 and appointed by President Obama to head his commission on what the Administration should do regarding surveillance of the population - which the President ignored):

http://www.npr.org/2016/03/14/47034...er-issues-than-fighting-terrorism-clarke-says

Clarke sides with John Oliver and so does most of the intelligence establishment apparently. Says the FBI could take the phone to the NSA and get it opened immediately and that this isn't about what's on the phone (which is likely nothing) but is about setting a legal precedent to give us a future where the government can open anyone's smartphone / computer that is deemed (for whatever reason at the moment) a threat. With the proud recent political history of Hoover at the FBI, McCarthy and Nixon as some examples of abusing spying privileges for their own ends I agree with Clarke and Oliver on this.

Also think Apple's leadership should seriously consider making a paradigm shift (cause this push by govts to do this will not end) and move to making their OS, compiler, apps and firmware / BIOS images open source (not free) so it can be publicly audited and so that secret orders from secret govt courts (FISA) can't force Apple to put backdoors in without the public finding out. This would be a huge amount of work, but the future isn't going to get better on this. This would also result in Apple's sales going through the roof (since nobody else is doing it) - could see them doubling Mac sales easily (gotta do everything though, even BIOS).

'The uploader has not made this video available in my country'. It's like a MacRumors give-away competition! :D

Still, from the description it seems like this is a positive thing for people who are allowed to see it.

Works only in these countries:

Impressive that some sense reach a large chunk of the US population. Well done.

People are allowed to change their opinions. But, sadly, in today's political world in America, they're not.

In the video, it shows that Harry Reid (Republican) changes his opinion from one side to the other on this issue. Why did you not say 'Republicans have a double standard and are hypocritical'???
Harry Reid is a Nevada democrat and former senate majority leader. Lindsey Graham is in the video and is a South Carolina republican.

I love John Oliver. He's funny yet at the same time informative.

Yes, I really liked that video. I'm going to watch more of that guy.

One thing I thought was interesting was this "Lindsay Graham" politician. I was happy that he seemed to have thought things over and was perhaps re-considering his position about this encryption issue. It gives me a feeling that at least some politicians are capable of thinking when I see a guy like this showing that he might have actually looked at the real issue and thought about it. Refreshing!

There is a difference between change of opinion when presented with new facts or arguments, and being two-faced or hypocritical. Often the two look and sound the same on the surface, and one really needs to think and analyze it to determine which it is when looking or listening to a politician.

Obama doesn't appear to have changed his prior opinion regarding China's law that would require tech companies to let China access locked devices. He isn't now saying China's position is nuanced and in some cases maybe China should have access to American's private information if it's for counter-terrorism purposes - that would be a change of opinion. He's saying that only when it's the US that is asking for the access, the situation is nuanced and government access and privacy need to be balanced. It's two-faced and hypocritical because he's applying a different standard to two otherwise identical situations, and even more frustratingly, he's doing it without acknowledging that the two situations are irreconcilable. This isn't open-mindedness that should be praised.

I like it when politicians are open to new facts or arguments and are flexible enough to change their opinion, stubborn politicians are bad. However, saying one thing with their mouth while at the same time doing the opposite with their hand is not change of opinion. I like Obama, but his stance on this should be condemned.

Video not available in the UK but if you are in the UK and have access to Sky Atlantic then the the entire show is on tonight at 10:10pm...

And if you are a fan of John Oliver you might also want to check out the recently resurrected Bugle Podcast (http://thebuglepodcast.com) that he does with Andy Zaltzman.

Oh indeed! I'd greet Producer Chris in the time-honoured fashion, but it would be an instant ban for me! I just hope Andy has a few choice pun-runs primed to inflict on us.

I watch John Oliver every week and love the show but I don't know how on earth you can come away with the "nearly partisan-free" perception. John definitely has a particular leaning and both the selection of his topics and the presentation reflect that. I don't think any sort of "Stewart association" is leading people to find Oliver too liberal; if anything I think Stewart was more subtle.

Best comment of the episode ;)

Is there any human way John Oliver could run for president? .. No "lol" I'm dead serious.

(Plot twist, I ask this as a Canadian looking out for America's best interests lol)

Unfortunately he is 't a natural born US citizen. That kind of excludes his what be an enjoyable participation in the running of the US Presidential candidates.

i get what you're saying, but really, many of his feature segments are just corruption or absurdity focused. Last Week Tonight topics off the top of my head: special districts, state lotteries, student loan debt, the patent system, FIFA, the Indian general election.... i know there are plenty more.

yes, he aligns more with liberals than republicans, but considering (imo) that there are 2-3 Republican parties right now of varying degrees of ideology, but that's just pushing further and further away from the cultural norm. i'm willing to go out on a limb that Oliver would appeal to far more republicans than people would expect if he'd get the right contextual exposure.

I love British wit, makes ordinary info and news reports much more lively.
That's nice but the show is based on the daily show styling where he used to work at. Which is us style. Plus I believe the writers for last week are also from us.

agreed, his show isn't like any british show i've seen. he's got american sensibilities with an outsider's perspective. not really a 'classic' british wit.

Charlie Brooker has been doing something similar for some (the Australian children's entertainer featured is in jail for paedophilia) time e.g.:

Certainly not as long as Stewart.
Bye the bye I saw somebody refer to Trumps hair as something that you'd expect to see growing on a Highland bulls bollocks (well it made me laugh) Pic of one such bull for context:

If you like his style, be sure to check out his (and Andy's) now sadly monthly podcast gem, The Bugle.

I went to a Letterman taping two Junes ago, and luckily had John Oliver on the program. It was a close call on excitement between seeing him, or Pea Boy, but I have a massive respect for his wit and thought.

Yea, laugh it up, but this is actually quite a serious issue.

And, when it hits that 'hacked jeep' segment, you know it's going off the rails. What BS.

(OK, got past that and watched the rest... I guess if you can ignore some of the attempts at humor, the dismissive intro, and the lame inclusion of the Jeep-hack stunt, it eventually does get in some good points.)
