But they stopped being "just a phone" about a decade ago. Now they're small computers we carry everywhere with us, that happen to have an app that can make and receive phone calls. It's kind of astonishing how thoroughly the devices that really were just a phone have disappeared from the mobile landscape in the past decade.

This isn't really surprising, is it? I mean if we look at profit margins, it was always a matter of time until lower cost phones with similar quality started to catch on.

I mean theoretically an exact iPhone replica with the exact same hardware and build quality, but running something not iOS could be sold at 25% profit margins and make a company (like Xiaomi for example) a ton of money.
