The two people with a jolla handset will now have to go and spend $2000 on a decent 3D printer to make their own $free case .... /s
It has started very well, given the modest specs. In December it was the #5 device at the Finnish operator that carries it.
They'll probably break though. Great idea, but those materials that are used for 3D printing aren't meant to be used on something you pick up and throw around all day.
You mean for the cheap ones. Medicine is one of the top applications, for example. There are some that even print in titanium ($$$$$$).
I have a 3d printer and it's near impossible to print a functioning 5s case. ABS and PLA are just too brittle to use as cases, usually they crack when trying to put them on. Usually I'll download a case from thingyverse them import it into solidworks and modify it slightly. Still haven't gotten one to work properly.
Here's a picture of where they always crack. This one was printed with ABS.
How much would it cost in TOTAL to print a case in titanium though? I mean, that guy had to haggle to get him to print that case for $75.
You don't need to go that extreme.
