I'm happy enough with the Day One I've paid for in full. They promise this will not change, therefore no gripes. However, the slow trickle of apps toward subscription is becoming a flood. I for one will not sign up for a subscription app. I will pay out a significant amount for a one off payment for a truly good application, for example I just paid out heavily for 'Things 3'. Had it been subscription, then I would have just given up on it. These developers must know what they're doing. At least, I hope so for their sake, because when times get hard, subsriptions are very often the first thing to go.

LOL. Yeah, done. Perpetual payments to keep your thoughts in one place. I think not...

PS... Who doesn't see this on the horizon for Things app... if they are not already there.

Good decision, every better app should be on a subscription model, $2-3/month is a really not that much.
Everyone wants a free stuff, which is totally disgusting.

Subscription = better product = less time wasted and a better experience for you.
Why you can't understand this.

So please don't cry!
Don't blame.

This tory with Subscription = better product applies for more complex apps like Adobe's Suite.
For a crappy journal app - it makes no sense the price.

The problem is that they should have kept a 1 time purchase per release and add subscriptions for those who want to use it for more.
It is a nicely designed app - no doubt - and I loved it but having to pay 50EUR/year just to log in journal things and maybe once in a while add a note it's not justified.
Many companies mistaken or do not understand the vast majority of their users.
In this case - I think they were a little too greedy.

Yes - give 50 eur subscription for those who want to use more than 3 journals and they really want advanced synch and all other features.
But hey... this is their model - in the end they may get money or they may screw themselves.

DayOne and Evernote are dead to me as of this moment.

You are either trying to create an argument or don't understand the people who have posted. Who said they want free stuff? I used to pay for Day One. I just stopped using it as they removed features. I don't mind paying ONCE for an app, then I CAN DECIDE when and if an upgrade is right for me. I don't want that choice put on the dev and unless I forget to cancel, I still am getting charged. Who wants to keep track of 20 subs? The only sub I have is Office 365, and I use that for work/home. But to say we just want free stuff... NO, we want to PURCHASE, not rent software. v2 of an app may be perfect for my needs. Why would I pay a sub to have the latest updates, when the next version may remove/break things I come to love?

I guess I took the bait...

1Password, you are on notice! Love you guys, get to sub only, I'm out.

Pixelmator PAID
Affinity Designer PAID
Coda PAID
Keyboard Maestro PAID
Transmit PAID
SuperDuper PAID
TextSoap PAID
Pixave PAID

Boom 2 PAID
Flare 2 PAID

And these are just the apps I use now... I have PAID for far more. As you can see, I WANT NOTHING FOR FREE. I simply WANT TO OWN my apps. When they suck, I don't upgrade, I move on. I don't want my hand held constantly with the dev reaching out to pull me back in!

No. Subscription is an evil cancer in the software industry. VERY few pieces of software justifies this model. Software should be payed for, absolutely. I'd rather pay than have free software with ads. But the evilness of the subscription model is that your software stops working the day you stop paying, and your data is held hostage. Unlike the pay once model.

Same here.

Paid for both versions and now this. Done with these guys but will use the current one as long as it does not break. Such a pity....this, 1Password and YNAB.

Although, I think at the moment, there is no good alternative to Day One

Everyone wants free stuff? The app used to cost $39.99, that is far from free.

Which apps did you have this experience with? I did not have this experience with Photoshop, thankfully there's Affinity Photo which I moved to.

Renting software, no thanks. Pay for a quality app and then have the option to pay for an upgrade when new features come out that I care about, that is the best model for me.

Right. I paid for all versions of this. And this will be last time. There is no way I'll be coerced into a forever payment.
Bye bye Day One.

Any suggestions for a replacement ?

I've seen other people using OneNote ( https://davidcalves.com/2012/07/18/onenote-for-your-journals/ ). I've been looking at Notes with a Pythonista script to add location / weather ( just need to figure out something for foot count ). AFAIK, neither OneNote / Notes limit the number of photos that are added.

My math, 50/12, says it'll cost $4.17 a month, not "$2-3".

To be fair, YNAB actually saves you money. I'm still rocking YNAB 4 though. I'll prob switch to their Saas once I get a new Mac in the next year or so and don't have an option since it's not going to be supported on new Mac OS versions.

Agree. Adobe CC and Microsoft O365 are the only ones I don't mind paying a sub fee for. These app devs all think they have a product worth charging almost as much as a O365 sub are crazy.

If their smart they will close their doors now before they incur debt.
I always suspect about the cash flow and the profitability of a business when they switch to a subscription model. Big companies like Adobe and Microsoft may get away with it and their reasons may have to do with increasing revenues (greed) as opposed to sustainability but for smaller businesses, it smells trouble to me.
