I have a batch of about 100 jpgs that seem to be corrupted in some way, since only 4/5ths appears. The thumbnail still appears, but I know that is separate from the main file. I assumed they were lost. However, what gives me pause is that when I open all the photos at the same time in Preview and use Contact Sheet view, the images are briefly all there. Then, in half a second 4/5ths of the image disappears again and I am back to the same corrupted image. My question is, does anyone know if the images appearing intact in Preview's Contact Sheet view is reason for hope? Or is that tied to the thumbnail file and I should lose all hope?

Losing Photos with Preview
Preview in Lion is losing photos after editing. The file size reduces to ~250KB from a few MB and opens as a blank photo. Preview in Snow Leopard did not lose them like this.
The other problem is that, if you are not careful to rename a photo before editing, you lose the original too. The old "Save As" selection used to work great. Plus "Save As" gave you a choice of folders to save in. Not now. I'm on the verge of going back to Snow Leopard. 😡
My impression is that Preview has become a PDF viewer, and as a photo editor . . . forget it.
While I'm whining, I'm not happy with iCloud either, and the popups with default iCloud use are very annoying. 😡

With Mountain Lion Preview a one page black and white text page scans as a 1.7MB pdf file. There doesn't appear to be an option reduce the size of the file with cropping or to scan as a jpeg file. Gmail balks at sending 1.7 MB files.

Update: There is a selection under details for TIFF or PNG files. The PNG file was 9 KB.

Preview used to be good for simple editing of photos. What went wrong? Why did Apple take something that worked and mess it up?

You have iPhoto for editing photos. As for reducing the file size of a PDF, this can easily be done with Preview.
Preview>File>Export>Format😛DF>Quartz Filter:Reduce File Size.

However, I still persist with "Why did Apple do this?"
I really dislike iPhoto. I never know what it's going to do next. My feeling is I'd have to take a class or a lot of reading to learn how to use it. I have a friend who did take a class on iPhoto, and she's still confused. I use Pixelmator, but Preview used to be such a nice quick fix.
With Preview you used to go to Tools>Adjust Size. Fairly straight forward, right? Why has this option been eliminated and put under "Export" and an obscure name of "Quartz Filter" which sounds like some strange effect I would never want. Why has the option to choose the size of file been taken away? Why did the "Save As" option get taken away?
Why don't software programmers look over the shoulder of naive users like me, so they start to understand the frustrations of average users? They don't even fix a stupid long standing problem like having the shortcut key symbols in their menus not match the symbols actually on a keyboard. What key is a backward slash with a superscript minus sign or a clock with one hand pointing at 10 o'clock?
Take away: Update infrequently, but when you do, brace yourself for a lot of frustration. I'm on the edge of going back to Snow Leopard.

I do not use much of the software Apple gives with its computers but I do learn it anyways. I find it handy for quick, simple little things I need to get done. Like lowering the file size of a PDF with Preview. Doing a quick 10 or 15 second video clip with iMovie, Garageband or iPhoto. The Help Menus in each program are such a good feature. I have Adobe for the larger work load.
The programs will only frustrate you if you let them. Yes Apple has dumbed down some of their programs to far, such as the new iWork suite, but at least they are not overwriting all the old programs with the new ones, which means you still have the old ones to work with. That is not with all the programs but at least some of them.
You have other alternatives out there to choose from. I was not totally happy with Finder and wanted more features so I purchased TotalFinder. Wanted more feature for my dock so I purchased HyperDock. And so on. As you stated, you wanted more photo editing feature than iPhoto could offer so you went with Pixelmator. Good coice by the way and cheap.
Yes I know, here I am saying spend more money, but if you want added features, someone has to be paid for their time to create them. And most times when you buy a program or plugin to add features you end up with more than you need. Which can be a bonus in the end.
Considering the software comes free from Apple it does a pretty good job in most cases and a lot of people are using it without issues.
