Jumping from Mini to MacBook a little help

Been using a Mini for awhile.So I jumped to a 15" retina display just want to start right.
1. VPN or no VPN?
2. Utilities?
3. Any other basic stuff just to get started. This was a big purchase and I want it to last.

A good protective sleeve is a good start. I do not like those snap on cases due to hinge stress and they scratch the corners. I am guessing you mean VPN to the Mini to share files? Why not use Dropbox, or Google Drive?

As for software, VLC is great for almost all media files. I recommend Open Office for office work, GIMP for image design, and Audacity for audio. Finally if you are looking for a great software to write projects, I recommend iBooks Author.

2. I love the shareware TextExpander, Pixelmator, iStat Menus and Carbon Copy Cloner and Amadeus Pro.

For freewares I also love Meteorologist and Delivery Status.

3. Get the resource book OS X Mavericks: The Missing Manual when it comes out in January.
