Wow, running 64-bit mode produced this result!

I've been getting kernel panics on my MBP 17" 2010 constantly while running in 64-bit mode. Do you plan on doing so, full time, on the 2011? I'd be curious to see if I perhaps have a rouge driver issue somewhere.

That or it could be bad ram - I never had an issue with 64-bit mode, however.

I thought it was but I stress tested the ram with Diglloyd's Mac performance tools and the AHT. Both the aftermarket set and the OEM set was unstable in 64-bits. Uptime from running in 32-bit is back up to the weekly range as usual.

I put in 8GB or G.Skill DDR3 1333Mhz (PC10600) RAM bought from the egg. 100% working flawlessly. The original's are Hynix branded. The pics on the egg displaying the sample G.Skill PC10600 ram are NOT hynix...they are the following:

Even though newegg shows Hynix chips, it comes with G.Skill branded models:

8GB Ram Geekbench Results

This is the result after installing 8GB RAM. First run yield:

Fastest mac laptop I've ever owned. Makes my current C2D 2009 model act like it was running Windows Vista on a Core Duo processor :D

I bit the bullet on a 17" today as well. Wasn't really looking, was a bit of an impulse buy at Best Buy.

Wasn't overly sure about it just working on documents, ect. Then put in a DVD to rip with handbreak and did an hour video in about 2 minutes.

Blown Away!

I've got the exact same setup. Same machine, WD black, G-skill, same boxes LOL. I put the stock 750 in a USB enclosure.

Note the WD gets rather warm . But I think the stock one probably does also.

I put an Intel X-25 in a cheap Optibay for the boot drive.

I also bought an Intel 510, but I haven't opened it as i'm debating if these are worth the money. I would not be using it as a boot drive so the random 4k read issue would not be pressing. It would be a storage drive (a very fast one at that).
Still, there will be better deals in a couple weeks.

I've been waiting for this level of performance for a bit. It's about time I moved up to it.

YMMV :)

FYI that the 2011 MBPs boot into 64 bit mode by default, rather than the 32 bit mode of the 2010 and previous.

Thanks for that. I got some warnings (from Vmware) about that.
I have no idea what the difference (real world) would be, but a cursory look at some of these benches, appears to show an improvemnet of some kind.

Anyway 64 > than 32 right? :p

FWIW geekbench is pretty pointless as far as a benchmark goes. I would check encoding times/decoding times ect to determine a difference in speed.

it's actually a good benchmark for comparing which mac setup is faster - I agree encoding times matter more, however.

Revelated - I did not know 2011 MBP boot up in 64-bit by default - let me restart and check for this! The last time I booted up, it was 32bit unless I was mistaken...

I want an SSD - but not for the small sizes available with high price tags. I would like at least a 512GB SSD but at about $300 tops.

confirmed!!

Thumbs up for you revelated! I was so use to my 2009 C2D I didn't realize the new 2011 MBP's start up in 64bit mode by default! awesome, now I have to remember to boot up in 32bit for some vpn tools that only run in 32bit.

Congrats on your purchase :)
I'm planing to buy one as well but I'm not sure about the heat.
How are your temperatures ? (in both light/heavy works)

It's completely safe to say the 2011 is much cooler than my C2D 2009 2.8!! The fan kicks up high gear when encoding but then it goes back down to slower spin speeds and you still hear the fans, but compared to 2009 C2D, it's a huge difference! The C2D is definitely much hotter (to the touch) than the 2011.

I am extremely satisfied with the 2011 model. So much so I dropped $2500+tax on this one while still having my C2D on hand! I'll sell my C2D soon enough...

PS - I have no istat menu to check temperatures but definitely cool to touch when surfing, watching youtube, etc. It's really a joy to own this 2011.

Thanks,good to hear it :)

Congrats, I'm so jealous. I have the 2010 17" MBP upgraded to the i7 @ 2.8ghz. Looking at the geekbench score the current low end $1200 13" mac get's similar score to mine... In fact it scored higher! I am so sick to my stomach. :(

Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows why the the scores are so different for the same MacBook pro 2011 15" & 17"

As far as I can tell it's just a screen size, isn't it???

Thanks alot

Ian

It seems to be because the 17" has better thermal management (by virtue of having more space inside, if nothing else) that lets the processor run faster. So if you want to get the best use out of these new processors, get the 17".

Besides the thermal differences, Geekbench will change by 200-300 points each time you run it. I'm sure if you ran them both again there would be a few instances where the 15 gets a higher score.
