A) I didn't buy the laptop, it wasn't my money, I would have waited but I had to accept the money right then otherwise it might have been retracted/spent on something else.
to be honest I wish i'd bought it 3 months ago

B) it was peak season for my job (photographer) and I made £1800 in one week, so it has been more than paid off- I needed the laptop to make that money as my old computer is far too slow to process files quick enough. basically it was a necessary purchase.

So now the job has been done I could return the laptop and keep using my old one, but I don't really want to do that, and if I kept it and sold it for haswell I bet i'd sell it for exactly what I paid for it.

a couple of months is a long time too, for something that gets used professionally every day, my old laptop was just too slow and annoying, taking minutes to load a picture to photoshop, now it does it in seconds

If you're a professional that needs this Mac to make money, I think the choice is obvious. Keep it.

If you're not, or can get by with another one at the moment, then why not wait if a "soon" refresh will bother you?

Well, I have somewhat the same problem. Wanted to see a Haswell in a rMBP at WWDC but this didn't happen. I'm going to America in August. I can get a rMBP for about 2700$ witch is only 2000€ (I'm from Europe). This is a 700€ save on my part so I don't think a 10-15% performance boost and slightly longer battery life is worth the 700€.

Student discount in Europe would only set me back 200€ and maybe an iTunes card but I don't think it's worth compared to the 700€ I can safe. (Flying free to America for school so not paying there and leaving the box there won't make customs want to check on it so I'm safe on that part too)

I'm definitely keeping it, the question is switch to 16gb ram now or 16gb when haswell comes out, I definitely can get away with 8gb right now but if I start shooting more video/get a higher resolution camera ill appreciate the extra ram
And if I don't upgrade to haswell I'll be annoyed I didn't upgrade when i had the chance

Ssd space I'm not so concerned with as owc do the upgrade, and there's always external disks

Get 16GB now, don't wait for the Haswell refresh, don't bother trying to sell your IvB MBPR for a Haswell MBPR as you're just going to waste your time and money doing it.

thanks
I am 100% getting the 16gb option now, might even go all out for the 2.7 512gb option too

although I do think i'll get back what I paid for this system if I sell when haswell comes out, I got student discount so I'd sell for what I paid, or lose at most £50-£100?

If you are using it mainly on a desk anyway, what is the point of Haswell.
If anything Haswell might help battery life, it won't do anything even noticeable for performance. Put on a desk attached to external display the only thing worthwhile with a Haswell might be a Hd 5200 option which would allow the possibility of not having to use a dGPU while just running standard stuff on an external monitor.

Hmm, interesting, is it possible to run an iMac in monitor mode and have it running as a file server at the same time?

I haven't done this (no iMac), but have a look at this : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#1

See item 13. So yes, seems to be the answer.

I guess the point is that by waiting till Haswell arrives there may/will be some other changes to the rMBP that will make the wait worthwhile. c.f. Faster-Bigger SSDs/Better specs for the same price. That's why I'm waiting.

i don't get why people buy last year's model when the new one is gonna be released in a couple of months... it's obvious, but people still ignore it.

you had a working macbook pro to begin with, but spent around $2k on last year's technology.

You must not have a full time job.

if this works as I expect it to it will be completely epic, a 27" cinema display with built in file server, in an ideal world i'd be able to use the imac as a monitor for the macbook pro, but also connect the imac to the laptop via firewire and share all the disks connected to the iMac
something tells me this won't work as expected though

I'm definitely getting the 16gb option macbook pro, and i'm probably goinng to save a little longer and get a thunderbolt equipped iMac for future proofing (add a usb 3 thunderbolt dock), saving £150 to buy a 2009/10 model maybe isn't logical but at least i'd get to test it out and re-selling wouldn't lose me any money

Ok, so to cut a long story short we inherited some money, which allowed me to upgrade my 2008 macbook pro. I'm a photographer and I went for the 15" retina for the speed/portability.

It's a great machine, but i've been using it a few days now and realise how much I'm connected to an external display, I haven't even undocked it yet!
I still want to keep retina though, although I no longer thing the standard model is a poor choice.

I really wanted haswell models to come out at wddc, I intend to keep the machine for 3 years at least, but they didn't come out so I was forced to buy one as I had a lot of work to do and my old laptop wasnt up to the task. I had to get 8gb ram because that was all they had in stock, i've seen my page file go mental (at the moment it's 64gb), so I do wish i'd got 16gb. Once i've finished this job I can think about returning the macbook as it's in the 14 day returns period, and get the 16gb ram option sent to my house.

So the question is- get a 16gb model right now and be slightly annoyed when haswell comes out (not even sure what the main benefits are, battery life and wireless AC?), or keep this one, sell when haswell comes out for probably about what I paid for it and get a 512gb haswell with 16gb ram.

I also got 3 year apple care becuase it was too good to refuse with UK educational discount.

So what do you think, go 16gb now or wait till haswell?

battery life would be nice, but it's wireless AC really excites me, i'm currently using my old laptop as a server and if I got a wireless AC dongle and router I would have a pretty fast wireless server access using built in ac on haswell.

Haswell really doesn't make that much of a difference. If you are concerned about the performance, then it won't make any difference at all. But if those 2-4 hours extra battery life really are that important to you then go for it. Also the Haswell includes a better integrated graphics chip but this is obviously useless if you got a Macbook with a dedicated one.

This is why I am waiting. The MBA 13" Haswell last almost 2 times longer than the Ivy Bridge version under heavy load while offering better performance.

Agreed, plus the 15" has a bigger battery in general so we might be able to see even more battery life on that than the MBA which would be phenomenal. The rMBP is more than light enough to carry, the 15" provides incredible real estate, and not to mention its quiet, relatively cool, and super thin. Now I'm hoping with haswell we'll get 12 hours or more on a single charge. This thing is the ultimate portable powerhouse sure an air is lighter and thinner but it has a smaller, weaker screen and just less power. IMO the rMBP 15" with haswell would be ideal for any person traveling and in need of power, it seems like it just would be great on all fronts, no compromises. Then again, I could be wrong :D

OP, I'm pretty sure computers bought with edu-discount in the UK actually come with free life-time repairs.

Maybe 50% better on the 15" at most with Haswell, but certainly not double, because 1) the screen, 2) GPU and 3) standard voltage Haswell.

People are only getting 8 hours battery with the new haswell in the air forum? Also wifi and usb problems.
