Sometimes I wonder... those of us that had to haul a 10+ pound Dell Latitude D830 with a few spare batteries to university ..... maybe we are far more willing to enjoy a MBP 16 vs the younger crowd these days? lol.
I'll never forget the day going from that D830 to a MBA. Backpack went from horrible to, is it even in there with more battery life...
But maybe that memory makes me far more willing to lug the 16' MBP around?
Amazing computer. I've done broadcast video editing work and watched movies or written emails on planes, trains, in hotel rooms and on beds and couches. I've been able to plug in to monitors via USB-C or HDMI anywhere on the go and carried an entire mobile studio in a backpack with G-raid, keyboard, mouse, external SSDs, USB-A dongle, cables, microphone and Twelve South stand and I'm in my 60s... definitely not a light haul with all that stuff but still amazing that it can be done! If all you want to do is surf the web, watch movies, write and read emails and visit five or six coffee shops a day, then this is not the computer for you. Get an Air. With a good backpack this thing is very portable, and very powerful! Why anyone would complain about the weight when there are so many other options is a head-scratcher...

Cos its the only option from apple with a big screen.
I remember 2015 with the 12“ MB that there soon would come a 14“ version. And now the speculation of a 15“ Air. Still don’t get Apple why they don’t offer a big screen with less power (selling price, weight)
The ipads model pallet is out of control as well as the Airpods.
But imacs and MacBooks much to be desired.

Like I said there are lots of options. Probably best to define your needs. The 16” Pro/Max laptops are built for intensive workloads and easily work as cool running and portable desktop replacements, as in my own personal experience.
The 14” MacBook Pro is certainly lighter and more portable and it has plenty of power to accomplish heavy workloads as well.
Seems Apple may finally release a larger Air in the not too distant future, and I’m sure that will be a very profitable decision. Perhaps they will aim to compete with the model linked below for folks who are only looking to do lighter tasks and consume AV content, or you could always just purchase this one and save the energy and time spent complaining about a machine that does not fit your needs: https://www.pcmag.com/news/acer-unveils-worlds-lightest-16-inch-oled-laptop

Well if you count windows machines yes. There are plenty of 15“ and larger even for under $1000.
But since we are on MacRumors there is no alternative in the Apple world.
right now I have to travel with 2 Lenovo thinkpads that are each 5lbs+, people are just spoiled
having a preference is not being spoiled. I work hard for my toys so I make sure I'm happy with them.

That seems kind of harsh - a person trying to make the best decision he can with his/her money and you casting aspersions? While its a bummer that you have to carry 10 lbs of computer equipment, that in no way means that someone who's trying to make the best decision for his situation is spoiled ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah, its a great machine and one that I'm debating on whether trading/selling my 14" to get. Much of travel days are over at least for the foreseeable future so I can see the 16" fitting in.
As for other stating how heavy their old laptops were/are, we get it, you all are amazing, but that in no way helps the OP with his decision and his particular need. I too used to have old thinkpads/dells that were large and heavy, that in no way invalidates what the OP is trying to decide and I see no reason to offer that weird flex.

I don't think it invalidates the OP in any way. I don't see how in my post I said that. I was speaking from my own experience and my own opinion. It was hardly a flex.... just offering my experience and why I chose my 16.

How else would your quantify people telling the OP he's spoiled, needs to go to the gym, or how others carry 10+ lbs around without any issues?
We seem to do that lot (and I'm just as guilty of this), where we try to tell someone their complaint or concern isn't valid because it wasn't an issue for us. Instead of saying he's wrong, perhaps find reasons why the 16" is a better choice

I think your adding my post to the other posts is a bit unfair, but if that helps make your argument, go for it.
I was not trying to be mean to the OP - just explaining my own experience. I don't think the OP's view is at all invalid. My wife has a 14' MBP and I think it's a great laptop. No one's opinions/views are invalid - they're all extremely valuable and what makes Macrumors great. I agree MR tends to be a bit harsh to people's opinions.
The 14' MBP is an AMAZING laptop to travel with. It is noticeably lighter than the 16' MBP.

Don't let anyone make you feel bad for your decisions. What works for you is what matters most. You cannot go wrong with these laptops - they are the BEST computers I've used in my life (I had a 14' MBP for a few weeks).

I wasn't trying to make an argument as much as seeing others just post, i.e., "well I used to walk to school 5 miles uphill in the snow barefoot both ways" 🙂
Seriously I'm not without sin, and your post was not over the top. I do think however, people were more interested in saying how heavy their equipment, which does seem to project a message that the 16" weight (and size) is a non-issue when clearly is for the OP - maybe not a big issue and I think I'm making it bigger then it ought too as well and for that I offer my apologies to all.
btw, I bought a 16" MBP, and returned it for the 14", because I wanted something more portable, so I get what the OP is saying.

My experience with the 13' MBP i7, 13' MBP M1, 14' MBP M1 Max, and 16' MBP M1 Max. I use Windows 11 Parallels for some dev work and using db heavy applications.
13' MBP i7 - Fans screaming just booting Windows 11 in Parallels. Always superheated and always audible fans (very hot).
13' MBP M1 - Never heard fans, got it to overheat a few times and down clock. Fast.
14' MBP M1 Max - Only heard fans a few times - during heavy heavy use the case was warm but for the most part it was pretty cool (no where near uncomfortable). Extremely fast.
16' MBP M1 Max - Never hear the fans even in clamshell mode, case can get warm but most of the time ice cold. Extremely fast.
I would have no problem using the 14 or the 16. I struggle with grass is greener on other side syndrome so I'm jealous of my wife's 14' MBP - very portable. 😛

while I do respect Maflynn’s call for civility, after reading the entire thread again I believe the answers were all quite respectful given the hyperbole of the original poster’s message.
“waaaaaayyyyyyyy tooooooo heavy. ” and “lame 14” invite other opinions expressed without sweetening the pill, though I didn’t find anyone was particularly disrespectful and generally shared their personal experiences along with their opinions.

I am 82 years old. I have a 16" M2 fully loaded (with exception of only a 1TB SSD) 4.7 lbs is not too heavy IMHO. However, I also have a M2 fully loaded MBA and since getting the MBA to be honest I have been using the MBA a lot more than the 16". Until 2020 or so I had even Intel Dell notebooks (17 to 15") for many years. Still relearning the apple system (last owned an Apple //e a long time ago). So far Apple is great IMO over the Dell and 4.7 lbs is not heavy but I have to admit the weight of the MBA is easier to live with usually.

My 16" is heavy. I try to avoid taking it places, and use my iPad instead. But, when at my desk, work from my 16"...
I ended up buying a MBP 16 though I was looking for a MBA or MBP 14. It's only 1.3 pounds heavier than my Retina 13 from 2015 and I don't mind carrying it between home and work. Screen is gorgeous,! It is faster and watching movies is really a joy. I was resetting an old MBA recently to give it away and the screen looked too small. It felt almost like going back to an iPhone 4 after using promax for a while.

Unfortunately I returned it, and since doing more research ... don't laugh ... im finding out that you can't add more ram to these machines. (I've been a mac guy since the PPC 9500 but I haven't been working on them lately)
I was going to add a lot more ram in the future and got'dammint! You can't. I wonder how hard it is to even upgrade the SSD.
When you can't add more ram that is just too damn proprietary.
I might just wait to buy a 14" when the newer versions come out with the M2 cpu's next year.
