So i just picked up a used iPhone 3G , it is jailbroken as well as unlocked (firmware 2.2). How do i start from fresh (ie delete all the programs, etc the previous users had) but keep it jailbroken and unlocked?

    thanks

If you have a mac you can make a custom 2.2.1 ipsw with pwnage tool (google the iphone dev team). Then you can update the firmware while still having the ability on unlock. In the process you will remove all the old data and start with new software. Once you finished your phone will be jailbroken, then open up cydia, add the yellowsn0w source and install yellow snow, then your phone will have the newest software, be jailbroken, and unlocked! Good luck!

im actually not that concerned about keeping it unlocked. is there an easy way of upgrading to 2.2.1 and then jailbreaking it?

Yes, as long as you're sure you want to lock it back to AT&T (if you're in the states) then plug it into iTunes and upgrade to 2.2.1

Then go here and choose the tutorial that applies to your set up, and work through it.

But if you aren't certain, and want to retain the extra value that an unlocked phone has, follow the advice in the first reply.
