Thank you. Just clicked on your link above and it took 24 seconds to load!!

Followed instructions and it took me to Tudum where I had to provide credit card info to access the speed test and where the free trial (to get you to Ookla in the first place) is only 5 days (a bit sneaky)! After signing up, you have to search for the speed test. I got the results below which mean nothing to me, do not indicate what has to be fixed nor how to fix it. Grrr.

You've been scammed or happened to click on a ad. Speedtest doesn't require any info, specially not credit card info. Freeze your credit card before they empty your account!

I just bought a brand new M1 Imac from the Apple website and things are loading slowly. It doesn't matter what website I go to or what app I load, it loads slowly. I also noticed right when I first turned it on for the first time that my mouse was moving very slowly. Even when I went into settings to turn it up to the fastest speed, it's still much slower than I think it should be. I thought at first that maybe these issues were bc of my internet connection but I don't have this problem on my HP laptop or my iPhone which are all connected to the same internet. This is my first Apple computer so I'm not really sure where to start with finding out what the issue may be.
I bought an M1 Mac Mini shortly after you did and I'm experiencing similar issues, except mine involve loading pages. The sad part is that I've spent MANY HOURS on the phone with Apple Support and there's no solution in sight. ALL of the "suggestions" people mentioned here have been tried. All of them failed.

I've been a Mac user for 20 years and issues like yours and mine are frustrating and I need some solutions so I can get back to work. Good luck to you.

Same with me. I'm not computer savvy, but just set up my new (Yay!) iMac a couple of days ago and now pages are taking forever to load and the computer is BRAND NEW! So frustrating. Responses here would be helpful if I knew what half of the terms were/meant. Also have set Chrome to be my default browser four times and that has yet to work.
Hi Penelope: I bought an M1 Mac Mini shortly after you did and I'm experiencing similar issues after two weeks, except mine involve loading pages. The sad part is that I've spent MANY HOURS on the phone with Apple Support and there's no solution in sight. ALL of the "suggestions" people mentioned here have been tried. All of them failed.

My main browser is Firefox, which created issues for Apple Support because they DO NOT CARE ABOUT BROWSERS NOT NAMED Safari. So, I had to demonstrate to them the problem was happening with Safari. And it did. I beta-test websites for clients and friends and have used 7 different browsers. When one site hung up on FF, I couldn't open any other browser tab without a timed-out warning. We were able to recreate the problem, but I have been stiffed multiple times on the Apple Support side waiting for final response.

The last three women I spoke to agreed my problem was unusual, but I've seen bits here there on the Apple Community pages about the same issue with M1s. They also said, that I should get an new Mac Mini too, but I'm unsure that's the best solution given all of the problems with M1.

Have you had any luck on your end with a solution? Please let me know! Thanks!

This thread is kind of hysterical. LOL… “it’s radio interference! No, you need the Ookla speed test!!! Wait, could it be a graphical user interface glitch!?!! Was it a problem with a time machine back up!!??! Safe mode? Have you updated your OS? No, it’s the spotlight indexing!! WIPE THE DRIVE! WIPE THE DRIVE!“ 🤣🤣🤣

If I was a first time Mac user reading through this post, I would think the Macrumors crowd is a little bit nuts. LOL. There are two simple bits of good advice buried in the chaos above:

1) If it is a brand new machine and not performing properly, either call Apple or make an appointment at the store to have them fix the problem or give you a new device. It is possible that you have a defective product, or something went wrong in the setup. Apple will fix that for you over the phone or in person.

2) If you want to trouble shoot on your own, the best advice and first step is to simply check the activity monitor. [applications—>utilities—> activity monitor]. That will show you if something is slowing down your Mac’s CPU. You can take a screen shot of your activity monitor and post it here, and that would be the first step, if you want real help from this thread.
That's what I think too. For God sake, get a replacement soon. Don't bother with this slow machine. You bother when the warrantee is over and when apple geniuses aren't available.

Hello new here....got my brand new, out of the box M1 Desktop 16gb, 512 gb yesterday and I had the same issues: First I did all the initial set up and that went pretty smooth. But once I started getting my hands on it, slowness began:
Safari pages either did not load up or just took a long time to open, I opened Pages and it needed an update (along with iMovie, Keynote, and Numbers) the update took about 5 minutes - eventually all updated not before freezing on the update so I had to force quit it because Command-Q did not work, I tried opening the News app and that froze. The only app that really opened really fast were the Music app and Contacts.
I first thought it is just getting all the background stuff ready to go and this "slowness" would just go away but it was not the case. I am going to use it again later on today and will reply with hopefully better news.
Also, I am not complaining about the M1 but I just think it is odd for a brand new machine (fresh out of the box) to act up this way, especially after watching so many YouTube videos regarding how fast and smooth this M1 chip really is. It is a bit disappointing to have these issues from the start...if it keeps going this slow, next step will be a call to Apple...
Thanks in advance for any help on this issue

Yeah I think you both got a lemon

Out of curiosity try a disk speed test with the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test app from the App Store, you should reach around 2,7GBps both in read and write speeds

You are unlucky enough to have bought a defective product. Just return it for a replacement or refund. Nothing else to discuss here.

Safari and updating apps are network related tasks. Have you tested your connection, cables or WiFi?

You need to look at your internet connection. Is it by ethernet from your router or WiFi? Test just with Ethernet first if you can. Some WiFi routers have configuration/settings issues with WiFi to a Mac.

Use a internet speed test like https://www.speedtest.net to check your download/upload in Mbps.

You do not need both active only one (ethernet vs WiFI).

The speed of opening closing apps could be readily discerned by disabling your network altogether. Examples Pages, iMovie, Keynote, and Numbers. They don't need anything from the internet.

Now if you just got the Mac and it trying to update the OS and apps that need updating that could slow it down a lot until that is all accomplished. A full system OS update could be 11or 12 GB download. Do not wipe your M1 system volumes or you will need to to go to the Apple store to have a DFU restore. The M1 absolutely needs the system to be able to reinstall. You can always contact Apple and they can walk you through your setup on the phone.

Thanks for your answer. I will try that and for sure contact Apple if nothing cited here works. Thanks so much again!

I just wanted to update my post with the following: It looks like my iMac was just downloading some stuff from the cloud and getting itself updated dated. So far it has been 48 hours and everything is either working normally or loading pretty fast now as it should be doing.
I still want to thank everybody who chipped in to help on this subject, your suggestions are much appreciated!

Just a curious question: Your mini M1 was downloading your stuff or Apple stuff from the cloud?

The cursor is slow because the Magic mouse is one of the worst designed mice of all time. Use a different mouse and the cursor will be just fine.

I know this is an old comment, but this is nonsense and what makes it worse is that you would say it to a new Mac user who might not know any better. I've used a Magic Mouse for many years now, and the cursor is no more or less fast than any other optical mouse I've used with my Mac. The speed is easily adjusted in System Preferences > Mouse

I don't have an M1 mini, I have a 24" M1 desktop (sorry if I confuse everyone but I thought I stated that at the beginning). As this was a right out of the box Mac and it was taking too long to load Apps and even getting into the the web and overall just not being very responsive, I decided to leave it alone for 24 hours and I was planning on calling Apple Support. Once I got my hands on it, it did state that it had downloaded some updates and it was now running every bit smooth and fast as I seen and hear people brag about it.

I wanted to thank everyone who responded to these concerns, not just mine but everyone else's. I am not computer savvy, just try my best to handle tech problems. I could not really enjoy my M1 without your advice and your forum.

You mean the same new Mac user who was immediately struck by how poor their experience with the cursor was and created a thread? The same poster who also mentioned that they adjusted the mouse setting in system preferences? Just so we both are sure we are referring to the same person here.

Yes, the same person who's using the same mouse that thousands of others including I are without any problems. The same person who mentioned (if you recall) that apps and webpages were also slow (which obviously has nothing to do with the mouse). So it sounds to me like the whole system was lagging, which also affected the cursor. Had nothing to do with the brand of mouse he was using.

I may be in the minority but I love the Magic Mouse. I have used it all day, every day since it was released and for graphic design work it is the most sensitive and responsive mouse I have tried. Not for gaming though, I use a Logitech mouse which doesn’t feel as comfortable to use but does have all those extra buttons!

I love my MM too. Bought the trackpad too but I use it seldomly, just for browsing. For productivity I'm 100x faster with the MM

Agreed. The only issue I have is with one particular program that I use that has a ribbon menu interface at the top that lets you scroll left/right through the ribbon menus (unlike, say MS Office apps, where you have to click each ribbon menu heading to access them), but unfortunately it reacts insanely sensitively to the slightest Magic Mouse touch surface input, and the software has no option to disable ribbon scrolling. So, often I go to click on something, and all of a sudden it scrolls over to a completely different menu.
